Travel versions of medical equipment

We are taking a long-deferred trip to visit family on the other side of the globe for 10 days. Yay! However, we have a little one who gets very ill from garden-variety colds (the kind that live on airplanes). At home we have accumulated several pieces of medical equipment that help us keep her out of the hospital. I'm working on the contingency planning for our trip, and wondering about things like travel nebulizers, use of nebulizers on airplanes, and small portable suction that can do better than a Nosefrida. Lung-impaired travelers (or the family thereof), please share your insight. [more inside]

Breathing and Swimming

I'm trying to get back into swimming for my own personal fitness, and it's tougher than I thought it'd be to pick it back up. I took a TON of swimming lessons as a kid/teenager, and so I'm finding it fairly easy to remember how to do the strokes themselves, but not easy at all to remember how to breathe and not hyperventilate while I'm doing front crawl, breaststroke, etc. Any tips from MeFi swimmers? Deep inhalation causing me to feel weak (& the breaths are 'shuddering')

Wondering if anyone can help me identify the cause of this sudden change to my breathing? I don't think it's serious, and it seems to be subsiding somewhat, but I'm very curious about this phenomenon right now. Googling didn't help. Personal details inside. [more inside]

I breathe deeply and their muscles relax. Why?

Please explain the science behind this phenomenon. I want to know about the effect MY deep breathing has on the release of my clients' muscle tension. I have experienced and observed distinct differences between when I am deeply breathing, and when I default to shallow chest breathing. When I breathe deeply, their muscles release tension and relax, opening more and "melting" more to my work. It's quite remarkable. [more inside]

Anxiety or something worse?

Wife has shortness of breath- should we be worried? My wife is 29 and physically healthy (eats relatively well and exercises), but recently has shortness of breath on and off. It doesn't seem like a panic attack, as she has no other panic attack symptoms. However, she starts to get scared when its happening which makes it worse. It happens throughout the day on and off for a few weeks and then stops for months at a time. Could this just be stress, or something more serious?

Cat Pee Cardio

Will exercising in a poorly ventilated basement near a cat's litterbox have any detrimental effects on my health or the quality of my workout? (Aside from the unpleasantness). Should I be worried about breathing heavily in this environment? Moderate-to-vigorous cardio (elliptical) plus heavy-ish weight training, about 30-40 minutes 5x per week.

Puff, puff, OWWWWWWW

All my life I've had this problem when doing any sort of cardio activity: my throat can stand my breathing for about 15 seconds before it starts to burn like hell. I've tried breathing differently, asking for medical advice, drinking various beverages before/during/after working out... nothing. It's happened when I've been in better shape and when I'm a lazy slob. So I avoid cardio, which I have always desperately needed. How can I overcome this and work out pain-free? [more inside]

Help us breathe or help us leave

It's two am on Christmas morning and my wife and I haven't slept because we feel we are suffocating from all the cigarette smoke in my parent's house.
