I am trying to buy a very specific fife.

I was listening to the song Monkey by Harry Belafonte. For a variety of reasons I need to get a fife like the one being played at the start of that song. Mainly for playing while I prance around my house. It is major keyed and very high pitched. Please help me find this fife. I'm ready to purchase this instrument and spend the rest of my life mastering it. [more inside]

Why do so many retail stores, bars and restaurants play Brazilian music?

Aside from the fact that the music is quite enjoyable, why the over-representation? Can anyone shed light on this perception / observation? I notice that many retail stores, bars, restaurants/coffee shops, etc. play Brazilian music to a disproportionate level as compared to music from other places. [more inside]

what's the name of that movie about the girl photographer?

can anyone remember the name of that movie, I think it's Brazilian, about the girl photographer/traveler who happens upon a village of old people and stays at the old woman/bread maker's home? the girl uses pinhole photography and is generally treated with suspicion but, over the next couple of days, she affects the people of the town? it's on Netflix instant but damned if I can recall the name.

Streaming Brazilian radio with good music AND Portuguese speech?

As part of my quest to learn Brazilian Portuguese, I'd like to listen to Brazilian radio at least some of the time (preferably streaming through iTunes). However, what I'm finding online has lots of bossa nova (good) but pretty much no Portuguese (bad). Does anyone have pointers to stations that have both good music (my tastes are eclectic, so samba and forró are great but baile funk is great too) and DJs speaking in Portuguese in between?

Suggest Brazilian positive hip hop artists

Please suggest Brazilian hip hop/rap artists for me to check out that have a very positive/happy vibe rather than a gangster-y, macho-y sounding delivery. I don’t speak Portuguese, but love the sounds of the Brazilian accent (no English please), combined with fluid lyrical delivery. Actually, if you know any Portuguese artists, I’ll take those too. Thanks

Rootsy, Brazilian music in an Brazilian Expat bar in Lisbon, Portugal. What kind of music were they playing?

I was in Lisbon a few months ago and found 2 Brazilian “ex-pat” type bars with INCREDIBLE live music. I want to know what type it was. I believe it was in Barrio Alto, the big street for nightlife, but these bars really didn’t seem very touristy. I think I stumbled onto some kind of subculture. [more inside]

Mystery Brazilian Song about the Plight of Favela dwellers

When I was in Brazil a long time ago, I heard this song on a Brazilian CD. I do not know the name, only that it is some sad song about the Favelas, with a bunch of African sounding women wailing on the background. Here is the link the YouTube rough reproduction of it. Can anyone identify it or the CD it came from? [more inside]

Streaming Organic Music

It's the last straw, I'm officially tapping my toes to U2's Vertigo, courtesy of Morning Comes Eccectic on KCRW, this has got to stop. My seraches for streaming MP3's has been a bust. I listen to Flaresound and SomaFM, but really would like to find some more organic music for here at work. Bossa Nova would be great. I've completely given up on streaming jazz, I can't find anything that isn't either smooth (gak!) or includes Sun Ra into the mix (beating a trombone to death with a live chicken, while perhaps having artistic merit, isn't good office music.)

Latin jazz? Be-bop? Brazillian music?

Only qualifiers. Must be 128K stream, must be web based, (I don't want traffic reports from Helsinki interrupting my Metafiltering) Anyone got any tips?
