We are friends with a Brazilian couple that will soon be getting married. We will be sending gifts in the mail. The pre-shipping price point we're looking at is about $150. One thing we absolutely will be sending is a pack of red party cups (the groom has expressed interest in them!). But what else should we send? [more inside]
The Lonely Planet Brazil guide has a single paragraph suggesting it's possible for foreigners to participate in a Sambódromo parade, but it doesn't really say how. Have any mefites actually done this? How did it work? Who did you talk to? Please help this samba newb make my fiancée's dreams come true. [more inside]
I bought a really cheap fare to Sao Paolo for Christmas. And I was expecting to have to get a visa at some point to go. But then, when I had some downtime from work, I got Global Entry approved. And now I read that Brazil is a part of Global entry. Is it? Or will it be by Christmas? And do I still need to blow $130 bucks and a day of running around to get a Brazilian visa?
The good news is I’m going to be in Rio de Janeiro soon for work. The bad news is, it’s for work. I’ll probably be able to free up a day, or maybe a half-day, to be on my own. [more inside]
I have a free week tacked on to the end of a work trip in Brazil and I'm looking to spend it in one place. Difficulty level: Grad Student. [more inside]

I'm going to be traveling to Brazil next year and in anticipation, I'd like to read some novels set there. The trip will definitely include Rio de Janeiro, but other places are still up in the air. Nevertheless, I'm interested in good stories, even in they are set in Brazil but not Rio. [more inside]

He would be working for my family assisting in the care of my aging spouse. We understand a letter explaining the need would be in order. But has anyone else already gone through this and how did that go and are there any other good ideas to help from this side of the equator? He speaks English and has no criminal record and all that, we just want to ease the process and not do something in error not knowing the ropes. Is there anything special about the B visa process for example?
I'm looking to go to Brazil with my male friend for about 6 weeks (from about June 1 to July 15). We'd like to rent a room, apartment, house, shared house, hostel for relatively cheap (preferably under $500 per person). It seems like if we go outside São Paulo city center we can get cheaper prices, how should we go about looking? I am aware of Airbnb and couchsurfing.com Thanks
I am going on a business trip to Sao Paulo next month. I will have one free day in Sao Paulo (a Sunday, which I know many mean many things are closed) before my work begins and a 24 hour layover in Lima over the weekend on my way back (noon to noon). What are the can't-miss things in Sao Paulo and Lima? The must-sees, must-dos, must-drinks? Special snowflake details inside! [more inside]

As part of my quest to learn Brazilian Portuguese, I'd like to listen to Brazilian radio at least some of the time (preferably streaming through iTunes). However, what I'm finding online has lots of bossa nova (good) but pretty much no Portuguese (bad). Does anyone have pointers to stations that have both good music (my tastes are eclectic, so samba and forró are great but baile funk is great too) and DJs speaking in Portuguese in between?
I would like to see the favelas while I'm in Rio. I'd also like to not engage in poverty tourism. Is it possible to ethically and safely tour favela neighborhoods? [more inside]
I found an old MP3 with "Fazenda de Inhauma" as the title, some blog track I picked up years ago. I googled it and as best I can tell, it's a song about a neighborhood in Rio de Jainero that's been covered tons of times. So, what's the deal? Is it a favela party standard? Who made it big? Why are there so many versions? What does the song mean, lyrically? [more inside]
Two of my life dreams are to speak Portuguese fluently and to learn to surf. VOILA~~ I was invited for a professional exchange in Florianopolis, Brazil, and am over the moon! Can you help me 1) decide which months to arrive 2) make an initial plan for housing and transport, and 3) suggest volunteer conservation efforts for my partner? [more inside]

On our trip to South America, we will be spending 2.5 days in Iguazu, Argentina, and would appreciate any ideas as to things we should see. Is it worth the extra cost to go to the Brazilian side? Thanks!
I'm trying to understand the meaning of the phrase "te aprochega." I have seen it used as part of a parade celebrating southern Gaucho pride in Porto Alegre, near Uruguay. I understand that the "te" is kind of like our "y'all" because it's this southern vernacular that's not used so much up north, but what does the "approaching" part mean? I've only been able to find references on the Web to "te aprochega living," in the sense that someone might say "Gangnam Style."
I'm planning to visit the Pantanal wetlands later this year. Do you have any tips or recommendations for activities and tour companies? [more inside]

A week or 2 ago, I came across a photo gallery on imgur.com of photos of Brazilian military police using APCs and bulldozers to tear down favela housing in preparation for the World Cup and Olympics. I think I found it via a link from mefi, or possibly reddit. I have searched both sites for it, and done some googling, but I just can not find it. Hope me?

Why is it that in Brazil, there are no reviews / ratings of books on any of the online book stores? Does anyone know of any stores that might have this seemingly basic functionality?
RVing to Rio De Janeiro -- is this even possible? We are experienced RVers, with nearly a decade of fulltime North American trekking under our belts. Closing ceremony of the Olympics got us talking about 2016 in Rio, then somebody said, "Why don't you take your RV down there?" [more inside]
I have a ticket to travel from SFO to São Paulo tomorrow. Sadly, I just discovered I need a visa. There is no time to apply and the consulate is closed tomorrow so I wonder if I should just get on the plane and see what happens. If they turn me away in São Paulo what will they do? Put me on the next plane? Or will the airline not even board me without the visa? (I have a connecting flight in O'Hare.)

Hi well traveled mefites! My husband and I are taking the overnight bus from Lencois to Salvadore tonight and it arrives at something like 5am. We have ~6 hrs to kill in Salvadore before we catch our flight to Rio. Are there any places we can go to hang out early morning? I'm guessing the Market isn't open that early but maybe there's a restaurant that's open 24 hrs or a section of town that's nice in the early morning maybe.

I'm not the first to ask this type of question, but my situation is a bit unique. I have 10 days, starting at Iguazu Falls and flying out of Buenos Aires. My original plan was to travel down to Uruguay for a few days and then take the ferry over to Bs. As (for at least 4 days). I've recently learned about Salta, and it sounds really cool. Is it worth taking the long bus ride there and back down to Bs. As. or should I just let it go and head to Uruguay? [more inside]
Greetings, internet users! I need the best Brazilian movies you know. I've seen A Deriva, City of God, Black Orpheus, and none of the rest. What am I missing? Criteria are loose; basically, set in Brazil, people speaking Portuguese, and what you, O wise metafilterians, have judged to be worthy. Obrigado in advance!
I want to work in Brazil. I speak fluent Portuguese (learned in Mozambique long story), am currently employed at a great job (government track for four years- Hill staff but I'm looking for something new). I don't want to just do teaching at a school, etc. I'm looking for something a bit different- maybe working in a communications firm or the tourism industry. Maybe I am wrong for putting off teaching in a school but it just doesn't seem like my thing. [more inside]
