I have basic sewing skills and would like to improve and be able to make some clothing for myself and my (currently small) children. What I think I'd really like is to choose one (at a time) patterns/items of clothing and make it many many times, in different sizes, different fabrics, and gradually adding modifications as I become more comfortable with the basics. Our son, who's 3 (I guess closer to 3.5 if that matters, has essentially been sharing a room with us, his parents, since he was born. We live in a 2-bedroom apartment, and our second bedroom has always been a combination of office, guest bedroom, and miscellaneous storage. We have on multiple occasions in the last three years needed to use the guest room for long term visits from various family members so haven't really converted it to our son's bedroom. Now we are ready to, and I'm kind of blanking on how to make the space really great for him. I'm hoping the hivemind can come through with some interesting ideas. [more inside]

Inspired by the EL thread and the askme on it after following this moving thread about male socialization, what can I do as a parent (specifically a mother) do to help my sons grow up to be happier and healthier feminist men in a toxic patriarchy? What resources and strategies can I add to my parenting toolbox?
Is this normal? I often have anxiety about my kids. I need perspective. [more inside]
I'm making up my spring and summer reading list for a new project and I need books that look at the concepts of masculinity, dating and sex (for boys/men) written from a feminist perspective. Specifically, books that tackles the following subjects: Gender and sexuality spectrums, dating and relationships (anti Game stuff), teenage boy/young men psychology, parenting feminist boys, sex education, whatever, the whole deal. Ideally, I'd like more academic texts- but give me anything you like. Even things that you think are tangentially related or reading list links that you think might fall in line. Thanks!
My 15-year-old nephew has become interested in social movements, and as teenagers do, he's positioned himself against a few. I want him to have some facts that he can understand. Is there a book about feminism written specifically for boys? One that includes history plus arguments, both pro and con?
Are there versions of this book teaching kids to run a play/gallery/poetry slam/etc that are (a) non-gendered (b) geared towards adults? [more inside]

I’m looking some age-appropriate media that will show my bright, sensitive 3 year old son (who seems to be more interested in all things femme every day) that his interests are okay. He has lots of female family members and friends who demonstrate to him that there are a million different ways of being a woman or a girl. But neither his dad nor I is feminine in the slightest, and most of the men in his life are uniformly masculine. I’d love it if he could see positive representations of boys and men in books and TV who have a wider variety of gender expressions. [more inside]
My kiddo, like his dad, has a pants problem. Specifically, while his legs are only slightly longer than normal, he is built in such a way that regular pants don't make it far enough up his butt. Basically, he needs pants that are longer in the crotch-to-waistline area and can pull up higher. Most boy pants don't have a lot of room for that. We end up with either plumber crack or uncomfortably hitched pants. [more inside]
While at a small family gathering in our friends' home, my coworker's 7-year-old son suddenly grabbed a 4-year-old girl, raised her up into the air over his head, and body-slammed her onto the living room floor -- in full and complete view of 8 parents, including both of his own. His parents never did or said anything to him about it that night, and we're all horrified. How do we get to a place of acceptance when folks make vastly different parenting choices than our own, and our kids see it? Details ... [more inside]

Kinetic 3 is turning 15 this month and all his little heart wants is a BB gun, because he and his friends like to make war movies (or something). Every single inner instinct I have automatically says, "No. Not gonna happen, pal," because of all the obvious reasons (no guns in my house, what the hell do you need a gun for, someone's gonna lose an eye, etc.). My question is: is there any reason my kid should be allowed to get a BB gun? Am I missing something?
A boy, age 8-ish, is immigrating to Canada from another highly industrialized country. He speaks no English and has had very little exposure to North American culture. Other than candy, books (we have plenty) and hockey-related items, what could I put in a "Welcome to Canada" gift basket that would serve as a crash course in pop culture here, so that he might have an easier time when school starts in September?
