Worried mom of 10-year-old son with inferiority complex

10-year-old that struggles with many things who, for a few years now, has, when feeling sad/depressed, talked about how no one likes him, he's not good at anything, has no special qualities, isn't smart... etc. Looking for ways to help him. [more inside]

I have *the feels* for a boy that I made friends with.

Gift ideas for science-minded 11-year-old boy

Another gift-question, but I didn't find anything in the archives that's exactly applicable, so here goes: I'm looking for a Christmas gift for my 11-year-old cousin. He's pretty into science and math, and according to my aunt, already has tons of toys/games/kits. So it seems like she would prefer for him not to get another one of those, but her only other suggestion was to give him "coupons" to play card/board games with me. I'd be happy to do that except frankly I'm not sure he'd actually appreciate it - fwiw we rarely see each other, and I'm ten years older and female. I'm thinking a good book might be nice, but I don't know exactly what he's already read and liked, other than the typical series like Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, Diary of a Wimpy Kid etc. Any suggestions - either lesser-known books or other options I might not have thought of? My max price range is probably $25-30 but I can be a little flexible.

NYC experience gift for a 9 year old boy: GO!!

I babysit a (pretty mature) just-turned-9 year old boy and would like to get him a ~$20 gift that is non-material and preferably something we can do together in Manhattan. He has two little brothers so the apartment is bursting at the seams toys and books. My first, best idea is a trip to the Superhero Supply Store in Brooklyn, which totally would be his jam, but Mom would probably prefer staying in the city, so I'd like to source some other ideas first! Something we could do after school together one day that wouldn't take more than 2 hours would be perfect. Educational and enriching are secondary to straight up fun. He's mostly an indoorsy bookwormy type whose yearly highlight is the NYCC. He does karate and loves Shake Shack (but too cold!) He's vaguely into video games. And his bday party is inviting friends over to watch Indiana Jones and eat "dirt cake". Is there anything coming up in the next month event-wise that the little dude would enjoy? Any ideas for fun experiences would be magnificent. Thank you MeFi!!!

Short story about a boy, a window and his sister who never exists

I'm pretty sure I came across this through the blue in the last few years: a story by an American author about a boy who becomes fascinated by a window he can see on the outside of his house (round? high?) that doesn't correspond with a window on the inside, and he cajoles his sister into touching it, and when she does she and the window don't vanish, they cease to have ever existed. What is it? [more inside]

Co-Habitation Tips. General Advice and A Teenager is Involved.

The long-distance boyfriend and I have decided to get engaged and he's moving in. Yay! Me: 40's, divorced, sole adult in household for over 11 years, raised three kids, with youngest (14 yo son) still at home. Have friends and a happy life here. Him: 50's, never married but has a son in his 20's with whom he has a great relationship, has friends and interests he can continue to explore here. (He also has a job ready for him here.) To anyone who has experience of this type of situation, what advice do you wish you had been given to make this as painless (and ideally, actually fun!) as possible? [more inside]

What's this book?

What's this YA/children's book? A boy mysteriously arrives on earth somewhere like Tennesee or West Virginia. He can run fast and jump very far, heals quickly, gets along with animals and has no concept of violence, wars, etc. He's taken in by a family who also has children. Over time, they grow to love him and help him, while some neighbors are afraid of him and grow more and more violent. At the end of the book, his people are dancing in the hills/woods near a portal? and the boy invites the family that has taken care of him to return to his world with them. A few more details are after the jump. [more inside]

Are there any alternatives to the (Boy|Girl) Scouts that are secular in nature?

I have a son, almost 12, and a daughter, 9, and have been thinking about getting them involved in more outdoor activities. They're home-schooled, so they do get the opportunity to get out and play in the yard and with a few other kids in the neighborhood, but I'd like them to be introduced to a wider range of activities that outdoors-type groups like the scouts might provide (and not being an outdoorsy-type myself, might be able to better instruct in), but I'm put off by both the nationalistic and religious overtones that seem to pervade the Scout oaths. I'd prefer something with more of a global/wildlife focus. [more inside]

Guitar solos 101

I have been teaching myself guitar over the past few years and I still don't understand how to structure and play a guitar solo. Let's say I am playing a simple blues progression (I-IV-V) ...I have taught myself the blues scale... but when do I play what note? And do I need to move the scale up/down the neck in time with the progression. I want to be able to noodle an original solo... not just copy something already recorded.
