After four years of working for film festivals in various cities, and another few years living and working at a private school, I've come back to New York City to get my Master's while living at la maison famille. But nearly everything I own other than my clothes and my laptop is in boxes, either in my family's house or in storage. Some of those boxes haven't been opened since 2004. I dropped off all my possessions (pretty much everything I own) in boxes at a local storage facility in the UK (in awful circumstances - details below) and failed to get a receipt, only a verbal agreement that they would do my paperwork by email, and deliver my boxes in a month's time. I then had to leave the country. Four weeks later, I've yet to receive any invoice or confirmation. I've called and emailed several times and have been told in a genial but rather brusque way that they will get in touch, but so far no email. I'm heading back to the UK soon and want to get my boxes delivered this weekend. Still no invoice or receipt. I am FREAKING OUT that they are being so flaky. I am having panicky visions of them losing or selling all my things, and me showing up in the UK with basically the clothes on my back and nothing else. Have I made a terrible mistake? I'm looking for moving/shipping companies to send a couple of boxes of books & clothes from Australia to the USA (as I'm relocating). While requesting quotes, one company strongly suggested that I hire them to pack my things for me as apparently US Customs get suspicious if the boxes were packed by the individual mover (me, in this case) rather than by a professional. I feel overwhelmed, maybe because I am down with a bad cold, so I am hoping you can tell me how to get three bookshelves of books from CA to NYC. Constraints: cheaper is better, heavier is worse, and being home to get the packages is a serious challenge. Should I be shipping them in dozens of little boxes? Is there a better way?
