I'm a new bourbon collector and I'm wondering what stores in Brooklyn and NYC have the widest and best selections? Also, while I'm at it, what are some of your favorite bottles? But more importantly, where can I buy them locally?
I'm home for the holidays and seeing many friends after years apart. I have five days, each consisting of brunch, lunch and dinner with others, and am looking forward to unimaginable quantities of free alcohol. I am a seasoned (pickled?) drinker that does not normally get hangovers but never have I been on such a social whirlwind with so many opportunities to celebrate. Does anyone have advice for overcoming the potential weaknesses of the flesh to rise to this challenge? Or, how to pace myself when offered so much free deliciousness? Details below [more inside]
For my Secret Santa exchange I actually know the person pretty well, as opposed to every other year. Unfortunately my person tends to buy pretty much everything they need. I would identify his primary interests as cigars, bourbon, gadgets, Baltimore history and being Irish. What are some things I could get him where it wouldn't matter if he already had one? Hey! After years of amateur scotch/bourbon/rye drinking, I decided to take the plunge and bought a ticket to this year's WhiskeyFest. The challenge - there are over 400 bottles to sample (I know, poor me). But with a limited amount of time (and sobriety), what should I make a bee-line for? [more inside]
My single malt top preference is for fairly tradiitonal peatty Islay malts. I very much enjoy most of the Laphroaig outputs and love the 16 year old Lagavulin - I can take or leave Bruichladdich and have no interest in the trend for super peatty malts. I am looking to expand my tastes into bourbon but have little experience. Given that love of Laphroaig and Lagavulin, what bourbons might most appeal?
mrs. mmascolino is a big fan of Woodford Reserve Double Oaked. She particularly likes how smooth it is. Since I live near a well stocked Kentucky liquor store I thought I'd ask the citizens of the green to suggest other bourbons that match this ones in terms of smoothness.
I'm heading to Scotland in a few months and I'd like to give my host, who's a fan of Scotch (or just whisky, there) a gift of good American Bourbon. My criteria are that it's a very good bourbon, and that it's a bourbon that he couldn't get there in Scotland. I don't know anything about bourbon, though. Want to help me out? [more inside]

How do I go about finding the re-sale value of bottles of whiskey / bourbon? My father has a fair number of old whiskey and bourbon bottles he has picked up over his years of travelling. He wants to find out if they are worth anything, or if he should just drink them? One of the bottles he's got us this one? Is it actually worth that much on the private market? How would he go about selling it? Ebay?

I often want to head somewhere with a friend in Brooklyn or Manhattan for a quiet bourbon or two in a dark setting. Nothing snobby. Dives are great. But somewhere that two people can sit at a table and chat, in a somewhat disarming setting. I love bourbon, and I want to share my love of bourbon with new friends in charming or crappy settings. I'm a bit of a hermit, so I just don't get out enough to find new places! [more inside]

I'm having a whiskey party tonight. There will be a mix of scotches, bourbons, and other whiskeys, single-malt and blended. It will not be a dinner party but I'd like to provide some hors d'oeuvres and possibly desserts. I've heard sushi is good with whiskey so I thought lox might work, and this Honey and Whiskey ice cream looks good, but does anyone have any other ideas?
