Am I a crazy person to want to become a teacher?

I've taken a one year leave from a grad school program in physics. I was very unhappy in grad school, and I'm now leaning towards not going back. My next best idea is to become a high-school teacher in physics and/or math in the Boston area. Am I crazy? How do I do this? [more inside]

Where can I get oats in bulk near the Boston area?

Where can I get oats in bulk near the Boston area? I'm looking to cut down my breakfast costs, so I want to buy something like this. I assume that I could get it even cheaper than Amazon if I got it from a local cooperative/farm/something in the Boston area. Is that true, and if it is, how do I go about locating such a place?

Getting rid of a gas stove in good condition

I have a gas stove in good condition that I want to get rid of. Salvation Army's donation pickup line in my area (Boston) never answers my calls and never returns my messages. What other options do I have? Also, I was told by the stove salesman that selling the stove wasn't a good idea because I'd be liable if the purchaser hooked it up wrong and poisoned or exploded themselves. Is this true, or was it just FUD?

You were in Boston and you didn't see _____?!

I've been to Fenway, The Commons, and Harvard. I'm going back for a week's training (staying at Boston U Dorm with no car). I'm not the most excitable or prolific tourist, so I'm just looking for a few must see things. Just to give some random samples of myself: I like Indie Rock, Modern Art, and if Pax was in town I would have loved to check it out.

Best iPhone Apps for Boston and NYC

Does anyone know of any good iphone apps specific to either Boston or NYC? I live in Boston and will be visiting NYC frequently over the next few months. I'm looking for anything that is well designed and you've found useful (e.g. good public transit apps, travellers guides, stuff to keep me entertained on the train/bus while enroute in between the two or anything else that you think might be handy or fun.)

Questions about moving to specific part of Jamaica Plain

We've been thinking about moving to Jamaica Plain for a while but have been looking mostly around Centre St / Sumner Hill / Pondside. Now we've found a pretty great place available, but it's on the "wrong" side of the tracks, due east from Green St station, right by Franklin Park. So, how is it around there? How is Franklin Park? We're somewhat worried about crime/safety. Also somewhat worried about being relatively far from the nicer shops/etc on Centre. Would love to read any advice on this specific area, or JP / Franklin Park in general.

What kind of newspaper was this?

I was doing some poking around in the NY Times online archive, and found a brief article about a 'libidinous hebdomadal' known as The Town (later The Sporting Times) from 1865. The NY police were quite keen to confiscate this newspaper, apparently, which originated in Boston. Anyone heard of it or have any idea what kinda content it would contain? I'm guessing it's sort of dirty. [more inside]

What should I do with a half-day in Boston?

I'll have what's more-or-less equivalent to an eleven hour layover in Boston on Wednesday, Feb. 17 from around 6am to around 5pm. I'll be on foot and starting from the Boston Sheraton/Prudential Center. Bearing in mind that I'll either be pulling a carryon or need somewhere to stash it, what should I do with my time there? Note also that I'm an undergrad elsewhere, so if there are any neat events going on on campus (especially MIT or Harvard), I probably wouldn't stand out TOO much attending. I'm also up for meeting local MeFites. Thanks!

Ladies: What do you wish your boyfriend would get you for Valentine's Day?

My girlfriend and I have been dating for almost six months now, but I know we have a special connection. I know she is very emotionally involved in our relationship as am I. We are planning on moving in together during the summer (mostly to save money). We are both 23 and live in Boston. She is Chinese, concerned with the environment, and about to go to grad school. I have been working on my start-up company. Neither of us have much money. That does not mean I can't do something special for her. The day before Valentine's is our 6-month anniversary which my girlfriend is planning and has already got some tickets to the opera for us to see. We agreed that she would plan our anniversary and I would plan Valentine's. What are some special things I could do or give her to show her I love her?
