I just moved to Boston and don't know much of anything about it's history as a music town. I mean I'm generally aware of classic rock bands being from Boston, and then Mission of Burma, but what else? What books, documentaries, websites, magazine archives, etc should I read to find out more about the Boston (and surrounding area) scene? [more inside]
Due to a whole series of unpleasant events, I am looking for an apartment in the Brighton/Allston/Watertown area on a somewhat tight budget and very short notice — we need to move in by mid-July at the very latest. I just moved here, and don't really know how things work in this area, but I've already come close to exhausting what is listed on Craigslist/Padmapper. What else should I be trying? Other places to look for listings? Should I be working with a realtor? (And if so, how do I find one?) Etc etc etc. [more inside]
First time in Boston and going to go see a Red Sox game this weekend. Flying into Logan, staying at a hotel in Woburn (very close to the Anderson Regional Transportation Center,) and will be going to Fenway on Friday. What is the best way to go? [more inside]
Can you recommend a good therapist in the Somerville/Cambridge area? Near Union Square or Harvard Square a bonus. [more inside]
I have a new (awesome) job in Watertown, MA. My new challenge is figuring out how to do a move quickly, and without too much misery, and then how to have an awesome life. Questions inside, about housing, commuting, awesome things to check out, and a few other details. [more inside]
My partner and I are looking for a cute, cozy B&B for a short getaway at the end of May. Our ideal spot would have... [more inside]
Plans were made long ago for my almost-four year old child and myself to follow my husband to Boston while he presents a paper at a meeting. We intended to stay at the hotel with him and sightsee while he attends meetings all day for several days. Unfortunately, I sprained my ankle three weeks ago and am still on crutches with a CAM/ walking boot. [more inside]
Before Thanksgiving, construction crews working on the Massachusetts State House discovered a time capsule placed there in 1795. It was opened last night at a press conference. Will the contents be on display? [more inside]
I recently finished reading the weightlifting program Starting Strength and would like to try to follow it this year. However, I'm in pretty bad shape for a 26-year-old man and I have a bunch of bad habits. Given this, how should I prepare to follow Starting Strength? For instance: How should I gain flexibility beforehand, if necessary? How should I look for a good trainer and a good gym? If you've been in my situation, what worked and didn't work for you? [more inside]
I'll be in Boston with my kids for one day (two nights) in February. They're ages 8 and 12. Too old for the Children's Museum, too young to be set free to wander on their own. What should we do? [more inside]
I'd like to purchase an antique map (or a good reproduction) as a Christmas present, and I'm having trouble figuring out where to shop. [more inside]
Help me plan my travel from Boston to an event in NYC and back in 12 hours or less. [more inside]
I'll be in Boston tomorrow for a little bit, but without a car. That makes Microcenter hard-ish to get to, so I'm looking to the hive mind to steer me to someplace between South Station, Government Center, and the Back Bay that would have decent options for about $100 (preferably less). [more inside]
I moved into my new apartment on Sept 1st. Today, I received a "shut off notice" from the gas company (National Grid in Boston) stating that my unit has an unpaid balance of over $100 as of 8/29, and that the account will be going to collections. This is my first apartment - what should I do, AskMefi? Pay down the balance? Inform my landlord?
For my own personal reasons, I would like to move to Boston. The one obvious catch: I need to make money in order to do so. I'm in software support. It's a small company, so only one support tier before issues go to engineering. Lots of .NET and SQL Server work. I've been at it a few years. I have no idea how my skillset would measure up in a big city full of some of the brainiest people on the planet. Can I survive and thrive in Boston? [more inside]
I just got a new job in Boston (hurrah!) and need to be relocated there by the first week of September (boo!). How should I approach apartment hunting? [more inside]

Need: (1) QUICK ideas on bridal shower decorations and games, (2) direction on where to find said decorations and games (and flowers and baked goods) in Boston and/or (3) a Boston-area event planner who could do the work of finding decorations and decorate the event space. [more inside]
A few friends of mine live in Somerville, MA, which is right outside of Boston. For the past few weeks, a bird has been repeatedly showing up on their porch and, apparently, making friends with them. [more inside]

I'm moving to Boston and driving up there with my car and belongings. While the adventurous part of me would want to extend the duration of the trip to make stops and check out scenery, the practical part of me wants to get this 23 - 27 hour trip done ASAP. I want to go with the latter. [more inside]
I have the opportunity to book a Boston show with a solo artist for 22 May and have been struggling to find a room for him to play. Details under the cut. [more inside]
I'm leaving at 10am tomorrow from Waltham, MA and driving to Las Vegas. Stressing over the weather. I plan on taking it slow...driving maybe 8-9 hours a day and not at all after dark. I've never driven in bad weather so I'm really nervous. If I take Northern route I'll be in snow in Denver and if I take Southern route there are severe thunderstorms (and poss tornadoes?) in OK and TX by Wed. and Thurs. I'm driving alone and this is my first road trip. BTW I have a Nissan Rogue that will be packed full. Looking for advice planning route home...details appreciated! Thanks!
My brother is moving to Boston (Waltham area) and he's driving there from Vegas tomorrow morning. What is the best way to get there (avoiding Colorado) and what cities would you recommend stopping for a motel to crash along the way? Can it be done in 3 days? He's traveling alone and would like to avoid snow when possible. Not looking to sight see. Just want to find the simplest way to get there. Thank you.
I am emigrating to the the USA from New Zealand in a few weeks for work, but apart from the job I don't have much organised on the other side yet. Is there anyone else out there that has recently made a similar move? What difficulties did you encounter? What would you do differently? Any secret tricks for day-to-day living in the states (e.g.: setting up bank accounts, etc) that you can impart.

My boyfriend is attempting to leave the ivory tower and get a job as a scientist in industry in the Boston metro area. He has been applying for jobs and is starting to get some phone interviews, so we are trying to get him some acceptable clothes for an eventual in-person interview. His current wardrobe consists of thrift store t-shirts and REI space-fabric pants. I have no experience with men's fancy clothes. The problem is that he has an extremely athletic build. [more inside]
My husband and I will be in Boston the first week of November. I am coming for a conference, the husband is coming along so we can get a federal government recognized marriage. I am originally from the Boston area, but have not be back in 15 years. We have a few questions. [more inside]
We are currently on an (expensive, $180 / month) ATT family plan with out iPhone 4Ses. We want to upgrade to the 5Ses and are wondering if t-mobile's coverage in the Boston area is good enough. Also, what plan would you recommend for the following parameters? Thanks for your help! [more inside]

I'm interested in a mini tattoo and am looking for recommendations for an exceptional artist. It's a hard thing to do (Oliver Peck is obviously the best) so any thoughts you have for anyone you know about (ideally in the Boston or San Francisco area) would be appreciated.
Hello MeFites, Mr. Kitty and I are spending a long weekend in the fall up in Boston for our anniversary. We would love to find some amazing restaurants to try. [more inside]
A friend of mine has a 15 month old son who was diagnosed with anaplastic ependymoma (brain cancer). He had a complete surgical resection of the tumor, and the next step is proton beam therapy. She has her choice between pursuing therapy at MGH in Boston, or in New Jersey at either Procare in Somerset or Robert Wood in New Brunswick. The New Jersey facilities would be more convenient for her and her family, but if the Boston facility is better, she'll make it work. Can you give me any information about how these three facilities compare in terms of both effectiveness of the therapy and patient experience, particularly with very young pediatric patients?
Tell me about Roxbury and Dorchester neighborhoods! I've lived in Boston about ten years and am considering a move to one of those areas, but am pretty ignorant of the different neighborhoods within. Help me rectify this -- what are your favorite spots in Roxbury or Dorchester, and why? [more inside]
We have a 9 am flight on Saturday morning out of Logan Airport. We live in Quincy. We're leaning toward driving ourselves and leaving our car in the Economy Lot, with the idea that traffic's not likely to be a problem on a weekend morning. Do you think that's true? Also, how long does it take to take the shuttle from the Economy Lot to the airport (Terminal B, if that makes any difference)? [more inside]
My husband and I will be in Boston this weekend, and will have time Friday evening, Saturday afternoon, and most of the day Sunday to do stuff. So what should we do? We've never been to the city before, and are interested in historical/cultural activities, or just walking around and looking at things. We also need a few good restaurant suggestions, but don't want to hit the bar scene. We are staying near the Boston Convention Center. We won't have a car but could get one. [more inside]
We've only just got our act together to be able to take the same days off work next week - so my husband and I would like to take a quick trip somewhere. BUT - I cant think where to go! We'd be departing from Boston, leaving Thursday anytime, need to be back by sunday noon. I'd prefer to not have a long drive, or a flight of more than 4 hours, given we dont have a lot of time. I think given the time constraints, we're limited to the east coast USA. But I can't get further than that... Hivemind - help us figure out how to enjoy our first break in a while! Both of us enjoy going places where there are interesting or historic area to walk around and explore, great food, art galleries to sigh over... Me: Would love to go somewhere warm. Him: ability to get outdoors, small towns or rural areas preferred - no big city (so not NYC or DC) [more inside]
I am at a meetup in Boston at a German restaurant (Jacob Wirth) and we have been served cornbread as an appetizer, but none of the mefites present thinks of cornbread as a German food. Can anyone tell us if there is some Germanic cuisine connection we are missing here? Hope us, please -- a half-dozen curious mefites are baffled.
I'm 24, and I live in the suburbs a half-hour north of Boston. I'm about to get health insurance that includes mental care. I don't know how the private healthcare system works. How should I get a mental-health diagnosis? What doctors and therapists in the area could help me with whatever problems I may have? Details inside. [more inside]
I'm hosting a football-free celebration of man's finest feathered friend, this Sunday. What owl tributes and puns do I need on the menu, on the television, on the stereo, and as decor? [more inside]
Please recommend me your best vacation spots near Boston for an early 30s couple that likes the outdoors, history, trivia, movies, books, and good Italian food -- and prefers a trip that’s a mix of active and lazy. We’ll be in the area for a about a week around Memorial Day and want to know our options beyond the city itself.
It's 2013, it's the future, it's time to fire lasers into my eyes. Does anyone have any particularly good/bad experiences with offices in the Boston and Brookline area? Did you use Qualsight? [more inside]
I'm looking for recommendations for lounges in Boston for a birthday party with around 10-15 guests. We'll all be in our early 20s. Ideally, the place will play livelier music but not blast it to the point where I have to shout to have a conversation. Price range is pretty flexible. In terms of location, closer to the financial district is preferable, so nothing near Allston, brookline, etc. This would be for a Saturday night between 8 and 11 PM and I'd like to be able to make reservations. A decent sized crowd is appreciated, as we don't want to feel like we're the only group of people in the place. [more inside]
I am in the process of moving from my abusive family's house/city to another city with the wages I have saved over the past few years, but I have been unable to choose a city. It would ideally be affordable, and have a supportive environment for artists/illustrators with natural beauty and publishing opportunities. Do any cities come to mind? Any help would be very much appreciated! [more inside]

I just moved to a big city after graduating college in August. I'm not sure exactly what I want to do, and I'm not the most ambitious or confident person, to say the least. I have a somewhat untreated case of ADD, but I don't take my meds anymore; I'm finding coffee and exercise are much better. Anyways, I have gotten two different pieces of negative feedback on my phone behavior with people who had the potential to give me a job; they both basically said I sounded unenthusiastic. What is a good way to remedy this? [more inside]
I'm moving to Boston for a new job in a month, and wondering what's the best way to go about finding a place to live. [more inside]
