I'm getting married in Boston next month. We'd like to rent a karaoke machine instead of doing the standard DJ/dance thing.
I know that many regard DoReMi Karaoke the best place in Boston, but I called them yesterday and they said their rental karaoke machines are out of order. They asked me to call back closer to the wedding date because they don't know how quickly they'll be getting them fixed, or even if they want to.
Uh oh, I don't have any backup options! MeFi Bostonians, I need your help! [more inside]

Cambridge, MA's Alewife MBTA station: how much does a monthly parking pass cost? The MBTA's vendor site has all the clarity and customer service that you'd expect-- I need to register and
provide a credit card number before
they'll tell me the price and I just want a number. Thanks!

I moved into my new apartment on Sept 1st. Today, I received a "shut off notice" from the gas company (National Grid in Boston) stating that my unit has an unpaid balance of over $100 as of 8/29, and that the account will be going to collections. This is my first apartment - what should I do, AskMefi? Pay down the balance? Inform my landlord?

(Posting on behalf of a friend): I was convicted of a DUI in March 2014, and am trying to pick up the pieces. I need to pay for an SR-22 which is insurance on my license. If I do not pay for this insurance my license will lapse. The policy is less expensive if I also insure a vehicle but I will not need a car in the coming months and cannot afford the payments. I need help figuring out if it would be smarter to not pay for any insurance (letting my license lapse), to sell the car and use the profits to pay the SR-22, or to just keep the car (though I really do not want to). For my own personal reasons, I would like to move to Boston. The one obvious catch: I need to make money in order to do so. I'm in software support. It's a small company, so only one support tier before issues go to engineering. Lots of .NET and SQL Server work. I've been at it a few years. I have no idea how my skillset would measure up in a big city full of some of the brainiest people on the planet. Can I survive and thrive in Boston? [more inside]

I have two pairs of old glasses I really like, and want new lenses for them. Is there anywhere in Boston that will give me a good deal on them? Single vision, weak prescription, polycarbonate. I could probably be interested in adding the first AR option. Costco is not an option. Walmart is $79, but takes several weeks.
Where is the best place to have my new prescription filled?

I'm traveling to E. Greenwich, RI for a wedding in September and it's about $60 cheaper per person to fly into Boston than to Providence (arrive Thursday 3 pm - depart 7 pm Monday) I don't really want to deal with the traffic driving from Boston to Providence so I'm looking into rail options but I can't make heads or tails of the MBTA schedule. 1) Can I pick up the Providence line at the airport or would I have to get a cab or bus to the train? 2) Can I take my luggage (probably two bags)? 3) Can I rent a car on arrival in Providence? 4) What will it cost?

I would like to purchase a beater bicycle. I will use it to go several miles along a maintained bike path to get to a subway station. My ideal scenario: I travel to a location where there are several shit bicycles. I select one of the shit bicycles, I hand someone a smallish amount of money, and I stop thinking about purchasing a bicycle. I don't care if it is a pink bicycle covered in swastikas provided that it works and is reasonably priced. Let's make this happen!

We need sand for our daughter's sandbox - I think it takes like 17 50 pound bags. However, based on research we are all worked up now about the horribleness of the "Fake" sand from ground up quartz - due to inhalation issues. However, we know there can be an issue with real sand as well.
So I am looking for somewhere that can provide safe real sand - so probably real sand that has been washed to remove the very small particles.
This type of thing can be ordered online but it is hugely expensive.
I could call around to every landscape company but I know many are business only, have huge minimums or simply wouldn't want to talk to the type of sand I need (which is probably river sand or beach sand).

I've never driven in bad weather so I'm really nervous. If I take Northern route I'll be in snow in Denver and if I take Southern route there are severe thunderstorms (and poss tornadoes?) in OK and TX by Wed. and Thurs. I'm driving alone and this is my first road trip. BTW I have a Nissan Rogue that will be packed full. Looking for advice planning route home...details appreciated! Thanks!

My wife and I are planning a move to Boston’s western ‘burbs in the next couple of years (think Newton, Wellesley, Needham, etc.). We are looking for a community connected to downtown Boston via some form of public transportation, and with good schools. We do not need an interesting town center, and are happy to walk a mile or so to get to public transport (provided that there is a sidewalk). Since this is surely going to be a backbreakingly expensive purchase, I need the advice and anecdotes of random strangers on the internet to help us focus our search. [more inside]
