How do I work with/around my checked-out supervisor?

My supervisor is retiring in a month and seems to be checked out or perhaps just not worried about maintaining relationships. How do I maintain relationships and do good work in this situation? [more inside]

How do I get my boss to take my raise request seriously?

I'm underpaid after a year in my first job after Grad school. I've done great work and my boss is happy, but she won't put me up for a raise. I am in the process of looking for a new job and have an interview, but I'd prefer to stay at this one if she would take my request seriously. What's the best course of action? Snowflakes inside. Is it better to be demoted for my own sanity, or to stay miserable until I can jump ship?

Should I ask for a demotion? Or keep sucking it up while I look for the next big thing? I'm a newspaper editor who hates her job and would like to be a reporter again. [more inside]

How to Fire Someone?

Any advice on the least dehumanizing way to fire someone? I'm not so much worried about the mechanics of when to do it as how. What would you want to hear from your boss if you were let go tomorrow that wasn't merely blowing smoke up your posterior?

Boss charging sales rep for customer's bounced check

ShadyBossFilter: The situation is this: items were purchased at a cost of $6800 from one company to sell to another company. Our customer either bounced or stopped payment on the check, but our boss is trying to leave our sales rep holding the bag (i.e. he is deducting the cost of goods from his paycheck). The sales rep stood to take in a percentage of the profit as commission, but I would have assumed that the company takes on the risk in situations like this, not the employee. We're in New Jersey. What's the deal? (p.s. Today is my last day.) [more inside]
