BEC in popular media

References to Bose Einstein Condensates in popular media I am giving a general talk on BEC's (I am doing my PhD in the field), i am looking for any references to them in popular media, movies and tv shows and the like (but not science shows).

So far I know about the reference in Numb3rs and The Big Bang theory, does anybody know of any others?

Bright lights, dead Bose cd

How do I run a Bose Lifestyle 12 system with a replacement (non-Bose) cd player? Lightening fried the original cd player in a Bose Lifestyle 12 system. After the strike, the radio within the cd unit still worked, but not the cd player function itself. (We no longer have the Bose cd unit as the damage was claimed on insurance.) We want to be able to play cds through the amp/speaker system again.

The Bose cd player had three leads going to the amp combined into one loom - two for the signal and one 'control' lead which sent the info to the amp regarding which device - cd, radio, aux etc - was being used.

Anyone have any advice has to how we can use a non-Bose cd player and 'tell' the amp that a cd unit is being played? We've been trying other cd players, plugging the signal leads into the audio-out jacks but we ain't getting nuthin' cos there is no 'control' jack on non-Bose cd units. We think it's a switching problem, and we believe there is a solution. Do you know it?

FYI: We are familiar with audio equipment in general and are able solder etc.

Bose Sounddock + iPod Touch = :(

When I plug my 16GB iPod Touch into my Bose Sounddock, I hear a soft thumping sound, almost like a muffled helicopter. Turning the volume up or down on the iPod or dock has no effect. This never happened with my old iPod, but it does with multiple the iPod Touches I've tried it with. Does this happen to anyone else? How can I fix it?

How can I upgrade my home sound system & radio to a 21st century solution, without breaking the budget?

How can I upgrade my home sound system & radio to a 21st century solution, without breaking the budget? I have CDs and an old boom box that plays CDs & analog radio. What's the best system to upgrade to for the next 5-10 years? The situation is that I have a couple hundred CDs that I could rip, but no easy way (in the living room) to play them, without bringing out a laptop with tinny speakers.

I want something that will sit permanently in the living room, taking the place of the boombox, which can...

- play the mp3s with nice sound quality
- play the local (analog) radio with good reception
- ideally have a good user interface for both of the above
- optionally play actual CDs

Possible solutions -

- The Bose GSX seems to do all of the above, but it's $1,500. Anyone have a thumbs-up or thumbs-down on this?

- I guess I could also piece together an iMac with some nice speakers and just have an iMac do everything - except local analog radio, though I could just play the stations' iTunes streams, I guess. Though this would be about the same cost as the Bose above, it would also give me other functionality (Web browsing etc.).

- Any other solutions I've missed but should consider?

Thanks for any help, Metafilter community!

What's Wrong With My 10-Year-Old Speakers?

About 10 years ago, I bought a pair of Bose 301 Series 2 speakers. They've now been through a number of moves and they're sounding not-as-good. I'm not sure how to define the difference--they sound muddier, and less three-dimensional. I pulled off the front grill and didn't see any visible damage. How can I determine the cause, and then repair it? (Subsidiary question: Some googling has led me to the possibility of surfoam rot but at least to my untrained eyes, there doesn't seem to be anything that looks rotty. Would this rot be immediately apparent with the grill off, or would I need to do something more to spot it?)

PS: I now know that Bose is not the audiophiles speaker of choice, but 10-years-ago-me didn't know that, so this is what I've got to work with...

Help my friend select a HD Reciever unit.

My friend is in the market for a new Hi-Def receiver unit. He need help picking the right one for him.
"So one of my goals for 2008 is to upgrade to a Hi-Def TV. Now that I have several toys in the house that handle HD (PS3, Apple TV, Verizon FiOS), it's time to get the screen to match.

Resources for choosing a good TV are easy to find. I'm not too worried about that... it's the Receiver I need help with. ConsumerReports.org's last review was November 2006, and is now a year out of date. I looked at Amazon and walked past a BestBuy just to take a peek, but both were lacking in the technical details I need.

What I need is a Receiver unit with the following specifications:

* At LEAST 3 HDMI inputs, and possibly more for down the line if we get another device to hook up.
* One set of inputs for a Wii (Which does not do HDMI, but can do S-Video and I think Component as well - not sure)
* HDMI out (for the TV)
* Optional: 5-speaker out for the current Bose cube setup I have. While I could also buy new speakers, I'd rather not upgrade the whole AV system in one shot if I can help it. If not, then recommend a good set of speakers to go with the Receiver. ;-)

Once I have the Tuner, I figure I can get the HD TV with the holiday bonus and the post-holiday / pre-Superbowl sales that usually happen.

If anyone who is knowledgeable about such things can recommend brand names & models, I would be eternally graceful. (Links to specs would make me even happier, so I could oogle them and know what I'm looking at.)"

(I'll give him the link to this question, or you can see his lj post on the issue.)

I need a code.

I am trying to program my Bose (Cinemate) remote to control my DirecTV H20 receiver. I've tried all the DirecTV codes that Bose has listed.
Why the Bose Hate?

Audiophile-ter: I'm buying some old Bose 901s for my stepdad (series II) and I'm looking for info about equalizers. However, my searches for "Bose" here revealed lots of "Holy crap, don't ever buy Bose!" So now my question is, why the Bose hate? I was under the impression that the 901s were simply the bees damn knees. My stepdad certainly thinks so. Is there some sort of Bose/Something Else debate equivalent to the Mac/PC debate? Is the hate reserved for the newer all-in-one mini-stereos?

And while I'm at it, is it worth paying $200 for a set of Series IIs if they don't come with the EQ? From what I've read you don't want to mix and match across series, so will I just have to watch eBay for a series II EQ to come around?

Proper use for Bose PA

I have a Bose L1/PS1 Personalized Amplification System. Does this take the place of all my other amps? I have a Marshall amp that I normally use but I received the Bose L1/PS1 as a present. Does that take the place of the Marshall or do I run the Marshall through that? Can I plug my guitar into an effects pedal and then into the Bose like I normally would with an amp, or is that too much voltage for the Bose? I basically don't understand whether it takes the place of an amp, or if it is truly like a PA, where I would need to run the guitar through the amp first and then into the PA (Bose). If my question is confusingly worded, it's because I am confused. Thanks for any help anyone could provide!

Two different sets of speakers on amp/receiver.

Will two different pairs of speakers work and play well with my new Onkyo receiver? Hot on the heels of this question... I have a new Onkyo TX-8222 receiver. I've got two pairs of speakers; Boston Acoustics CR-57's in the living room (channel A), and Bose 161's downstairs (channel B). Reading the specs for the receiver, it says that when connecting two sets of speakers, their impedence should be between 8 and 16 ohms. The BA's are rated 8 ohms (OK), but the Bose are rated "4-8" ohms (that's what the spec sheet says). What does that mean? I guess the real question is; why does Bose list a range, and not a single number? Every other speaker I've seen lists a single number.

Will I be safe? I am 99% sure I will, but the left channel on the old receiver (TX-26) blew just two weeks ago. I had it running with the BA's and Bose 161's, and everything sounded fine (both channels on at same time, even running loud). I just assumed that it was an old age thing (the receiver's, not mine, dag-nabbit!).

Specs on the new Onkyo here.

P. S. I did send an email to customer service via the Bose web site. No reply yet.
P. P. S. I found a guy through a friend who buys old stereo components. I'll be calling him tomorrow. If you're on Long Island, and have stereo equipment gathering dust, let me know.

projector project?

Pursuant to the valuable surround sound system information found here and here, what options do I have with regard to my projector? [+] I dumpstered a brand-new InFocus projector a while ago and have recently begun to think about how to build a semi-permanent screening area. The projector has great brightness and video quality but does not incorporate some of the home-theater features seen on newer models, such as masking the non-signal areas from the projection, keystoning adjustment, and fan noise dampening.

Ideally, I'd like to mount it to the ceiling and wrap it in a noise-dampening box, venting the heat probably into my attic. Do I have to roll my own, or are there systems out there to do this?

Finally, I don't need a receiver or DVD playback system; I do need speakers. Should I even bother with fancy options such as flat-panel or Bose cubes? Additionally, what's the deal with the hype around Bose Acoustimass systems?

Thanks very much for your nerdly expertise!

iPod speaker recommendations?

I want to buy some speakers for an Ipod. Altec Lansing and Bose have both made speaker sets that use the docking port, so that's kind of cool, but are the speakers worth it? The Bose ones in particular are $300, which seems really high. Anyone have any experience with these? Or is it just better to buy some regular powered speakers and plug them into the earphone jack?
