I came into a job because my boss promised me the opportunity to move into management within two years. Four months later, he wants me to stop working for him because I have made him too busy. Other sales people express the same reluctance, I have made them too busy, they say. I am so bored. Please help me make sense of this and know where to go? [more inside]
I have a family member who has been in the hospital for over a year now. He is going crazy from boredom. He needs games to play on his iPad, but there are snowflake details inside. [more inside]
I have asked a similar question in the past about how to shed the weight, but I am really struggling to do what I need to do. I need to take off roughly fifty pounds and I thought that if I transitioned to a vegan diet that this would help with it. I was cleared by my doctor to workout, he gave me a stress test and said that everything was okay. [more inside]
About a year ago I joined a group that meets several times a month about spiritual topics. I was warmly welcomed and found great comfort in the group. However now, I am beginning to feel like the group is pretty much the same every meeting. I know Person X will talk about Thing X; Person Y will bring up Anecdote Y; etc. Should I quit? There's a twist... [more inside]
Can a natural loner learn to appreciate and enjoy other people more? Being a hermit is getting to be painfully boring. [more inside]
Not really sure how to say this, but I have been adding some hobbies and other things to my life but am finding it hard to keep doing everything. I have traditionally never been someone who gets bored very easily but I find myself in this position a good portion of the time right now. [more inside]
I was curious as to what others have done to find happiness once they have come to a complete system halt? Without going into too much detail, the last two years have been not very much fun. I finished my degree, but nothing really makes me very happy these days. I keep myself busy with volunteer work and I read a lot, but this has not resulted in any lasting happiness.
My life is calm. I live in one place. My house is clean and decluttered. I have free time. And now I am bored... [more inside]
Looking for advice on coping mentally and emotionally with a long stretch of stress, boredom and pain — when these are things that I ordinarily find very hard to tolerate. (No need to worry about coping physically; the logistical details of preparation, pain management and aftercare have been taken care of.) [more inside]
Sometimes I have trouble falling asleep because I can't stop worrying over issues of the day. I've found that listening to a slightly boring podcast really helps in those situations. So far, I've been listening to history podcasts but I think the technique would work with other subject areas and I'd like to find more such podcasts. I'm looking for intelligent and serious podcasts (little to no humorous banter) on important and/or academic topics. Ideally, the presenters would have monotonous voices and would spend a bit too much time on the dull minutiae, but the subject matter would be sufficiently interesting to help me stop thinking about other issues. I don't want to hear a group of friends or colleagues bantering. I don't want to hear comics interviewing each other. Pseudo-science or woo won't help because I may respond emotionally.

I'm tired of dreading large social gatherings where I am bored/bore people. How do I step up my game and engage people in conversation such that it is enjoyable and interesting for all involved? I want to avoid small talk. Please give me tips, tricks, mantras to make it better! [more inside]
Two weeks ago, I had the flu. I had all the classic symptoms: fever, muscle aches, coughing, chills, and fatigue that kept me in bed for 3 solid days. Now I am better but I am having odd symptoms. I don't feel like eating. Nothing tastes good. And nothing is interesting. I don't want to do crafts, or play with my dog, or read, or watch TV, or talk to my friends, or do anything, really. Everything seems annoying, and I am beyond bored, which is uncharacteristic for me. I don't feel sick, exactly, and I'm not totally exhausted like before, but I'm feeling the need to lie around in bed 2 to 4 hours a day. What is going on and how do I make it stop? All suggestions are welcome, including "woo."
I frequently have a lot of free time at work between projects (I work fast, maybe). I usually sit here and flip between Reddit and Metafilter, and maybe Facebook. I want to put this time to better use. [more inside]
I recently took a job as an overnight security guard. The entire job is standing at the entrance to a company's parking lot, from 10pm to 6am. In theory, I'm supposed to warn off people who look like they don't belong there, but that never happens. No books, smartphones, or other distractions are allowed. Sometimes I'll look at my watch and discover that it's only ten minutes since the last time I checked my watch, even though it feels like an hour has passed. Is there some kind of mental exercise or trick I can use to occupy my mind and make the time go faster?
I have a job that currently bores me greatly, with lots of down time during the day. A coworker and I started texting during our workday recently, and I find it entertains me and passes the time, in addition to pushing a few of my other buttons. Unfortunately this relationship has gone a bit sour so I'm looking for a similar situation and I'm wondering if there's an easy solution. Special snowflake details inside. [more inside]

My wife's son lives with us for 2 months during the summer (July 1st - August 30th) in San Diego. He is 15 1/2, too young to get a McMinimum wage franchise job at In-N-Out or Target and a bit too old/mature for 'camp'. Would love some suggestions on what, on earth, this child is going to do for 2 months. What did you do during your summer before Junior year? [more inside]
Why do I suddenly not care about anything? Could it be post-depression anhedonia? [I hope not] [more inside]
An earlier poster mentioned this attitude in a thread on boredom and it prompted me finally to post a question that's been simmering a while. I'm super-boring, but not bored -- it doesn't bother me when I'm on my own, but I'm starting to get a complex about it, vis a vis other people. Help me to have any interest, any interest at all! (Or to feel better about not having any.) Novel inside. [more inside]
I seem to get 'bored' with everything in my life - friends, relationship, job, country - every 1-2 years. I then make major life changes and it is starting to seriously affect me. Has anyone else experienced this situation? Does it get better? If not, do you have some good coping strategies? [more inside]

I'll be on three flights in the next 11 days, and although I'd like to sleep through every flight, I doubt that'll happen. I have an iPhone 4 and a 3rd-gen iPod Touch at my disposal, so I'd like to throw some new, non-battery-killing games on them before I go. [more inside]
How do I keep my puppy entertained on a rainy day? My 6&1/2 old puppy (see this previous post) has turned out to be ... rather interesting. She is not particularly high-energy and doesn't seem to take much joy in long walks. She is, however, really interested in romping and socializing with other dogs. [more inside]

I'm looking for a project that can be done mostly on the computers at my school. I'm usually there for 8-9 hours waiting for a ride, and my schoolwork takes me around an hour to finish. I'd like to put the rest of that free-time towards something productive. [more inside]

The girlfriend and I are going to Hawaii in a few weeks and have a 10 hour flight. I'm looking for a fun, nerdy card game to bring with us to kill some of that time, something that would be fun for two people. We both like the Fluxx variants, but they tend to spread out which seems inconvenient for the plane. Also probably things that require shouting or slapping (a la Spoons) would be bad. Bonus points if it's readily available at The Compleat Strategist in NYC.
A friend, sent me a text that she in a work "retreat" all day it is really dulll and painfully boring. Please help me think of clever texts to send that are witty and will crack a smile.
