How to ask "why wasn't I assigned this project?"

I started a new (web/software development) job in October. Recently a small-ish project was assigned to another employee (with admittedly less experience than I in the chosen framework), on which I would have enjoyed working. Is it possible to constructively ask for an explanation about why I wasn't chosen for this project? [more inside]

Can’t use my hands and bored out of my brain.

Due to a medical issue (I am undergoing treatment) I’m suffering a lot of pain in my joints - especially my hands, and especially bad after intricate repetitive things like typing (my partner is writing this up for me). Unfortunately this rules out a lot of things I like to do and I need some more options to fill in the day. [more inside]

Should I quit my boring job for a lower pay but more stimulating job?

My good paying and stress free job is boring me, I am not sure what else to do but I feel like I need to try something new that will challenge me more. A lot of people are telling me to stick to my comfortable and secure job but I just feel so useless and bored at my job as there's no opportunity for growth and a dead end for me. I am just doing repetitive tasks. Should I quit my job for a lower pay but more stimulating job? [more inside]

I need a project. Or a job. Or a hobby. Or SOMETHING ... at home

One of my children received a complex developmental diagnosis this year, which unfortunately means I won't be going back to work as planned. Now that we're out of the "total panic" phase and into the "settling into a routine" phase, I don't have a lot to do, and I am BORED OUT OF MY MIND. I'm flailing between the universe of "pick anything you want!" and "meet these constraints where you have to do it from home." I need some kind of intellectual work -- paid or unpaid -- to give me focus, a goal, and something to do. You guys know me pretty well; I thought you could help me narrow it down. Details within. Bored and concened while really groggy

Hi, This morning I went for an endoscopy with sedation (my first time). Every thing went fine, as far as I know. Now I still feel groggy and really really bored. I'm also uneasy about what happened. I'm watching cartoons on TV now but I don't know what else to do to not be bored and take my mind off of it. I think I slept all I can earlier. Any suggestions? More details under the cut. Cat acting starving, but has gained weight. What ELSE can I do?

My "new" cat, Tiny, has gained weight after becoming an indoors-only cat. The vet thinks she should lose about a pound. I have cut down her food just a bit, hoping that slowly it would help take off the weight. She acts like she is miserable, to the point of trying to eat things cats don't typically eat, like saltines (caught in the act!). Help me figure out what else I can do. [more inside]

How to keep from going crazy with boredom at my job?

I recently took a job as an overnight security guard. The entire job is standing at the entrance to a company's parking lot, from 10pm to 6am. In theory, I'm supposed to warn off people who look like they don't belong there, but that never happens. No books, smartphones, or other distractions are allowed. Sometimes I'll look at my watch and discover that it's only ten minutes since the last time I checked my watch, even though it feels like an hour has passed. Is there some kind of mental exercise or trick I can use to occupy my mind and make the time go faster?

Talk to me!

I have a job that currently bores me greatly, with lots of down time during the day. A coworker and I started texting during our workday recently, and I find it entertains me and passes the time, in addition to pushing a few of my other buttons. Unfortunately this relationship has gone a bit sour so I'm looking for a similar situation and I'm wondering if there's an easy solution. Special snowflake details inside. [more inside]

So basically everything is boring. I'm not talking about depression here- I am familiar with my own depressive symptoms and I'm not experiencing them. I'm content, pleasureable things give me pleasure, I'm just bored. I mean, pleasure is nice and all, but it's not exactly stimulating. [more inside]

The Bored Psychologist

Please help me fill up my time. I am a psychologist in private practice, and thanks to the recession, I have multiple times during the week with nothing to do--this is a new experience for me, and aside from the anxiety of not working as much as I need to, I am also bored to tears. Unfortunately, it is an hour here and an hour there--never any good block of time, and although in the future I may have to rearrange my schedule and put all my hours together, at the moment I am trying to maintain hope that I will be able to fill those hours with new patients. I am sick of surfing the internet, going for walks, updating patient files, and reading whatever (professional literature, novels). Any suggestions, Mefites, for how I can spend my time more productively, or at least entertainingly?
