Help me navigate a potentially depressing Thanksgiving

A parent fell ill 5 months ago following complications from surgery. My friend was just killed in an accident. Three days after the funeral was the election. The day after the election I found out this parent may not walk on their own again and may need to be in long-term care indefinitely. My Thanksgiving visit will be spent planning next steps for the parent. I have more emotions than I can process right now. [more inside]

Need help understanding my self-absorbed mother and what to do about her

I'm a 38F mom and my mother is 61. She "raised" me as a single mother-- bio dad is a true narcissist (I met him when I was an adult and we are NC now). Raised is in quotes because my grandmother did most of the raising. She is also probably NPD or BPD, I'm not sure. [more inside]

Can I have a healthy relationship with a "passive agressive" partner?

(Not sure the PA diagnosis is accurate.) She has broken up with me three times over the course of last month over ridiculously trivial affairs (details below), just to make up again soon afterwards. I have developed feelings for her and enjoy spending time together (when she is not in her jerk mode, that is). Any experience dealing successfully with a partner who displays abrupt mood changes? Should I seek an autism diagnosis? I was assessed for aspergers ten years ago, which was negative for a stated reason that I believe was incorrect, based on my own research into how autism presents in females. Is it worth trying again? [more inside]

What are some creative ways of disrupting or stopping a heated argument?

As a third party, how can I creatively stop or deescalate an argument I see happening between two others. I have been trying to creatively break up the many arguments I see in my family on a regular basis. I am witness to some pretty intense, basically borderline freak outs on a fairly regular basis. I really am a people person. Really. But go away.

YANMT, but maybe you can help me figure out why I push away the very people I'd like to get to know better, both in romantic and platonic capacities. I'm asking as sort of a follow-up to this question but I really wanted help exploring that specific facet of things a little more deeply. Snowflakes inside. [more inside]

Daughter with mental illness moving out, practical advice?

19 year old is moving out to a rented room this week. We live in a city where young adults typically live with family until marriage or 30s, and her four siblings (one older, three younger) live with us. The decision to ask her to move out if she escalated in breaking household rules (no drugs, porn, sex-work, hold down a job or school, don't abuse other family members) has been run past her psychiatrist and long-planned. She's excited to live on her own with no restrictions, we are terrified due to her long history of risky behavior and struggles with borderline personality disorder and PTSD from abuse. [more inside]

Borderline Personality Boundary Setting Resources?

I have a sister w/Borderline Personality. My father has completely cut her off to protect himself. My mother tries to keep the door open as she can, but has learned to set limits. I haven't talked to her on the phone in like a year, though I try to be supportive and let her know I love her via facebook now and then, just so she doesn't feel too alone/sad. She's been mostly decent about respecting my boundaries. However, my nephew (her son), just posted "Some people in the family need to step up -- getting calls and emails about suicide from my mom every 6 hours is draining. Grandparents cut off contact with her (which is only partly true, it's that mom doesn't give as much attention as my sister who demands demands demands attention wants), and I can't keep doing this. Tips for me to talk to him? (i.e. resources for him to learn to set boundaries, ways to think about the manipulations, etc...) [more inside]

When long distance love crosses the borderline disorder.

The girl I love, who wants to be my wife, is 3,000 miles away from me. She is/was a cutter, may have Borderline (BPD) and lives in a country that I don't trust their mental health system. What should I do until I get her to America and a qualified therapist? OR how do I let her go gently? [more inside]

How can I try to help a depressed, possibly borderline, friend who's trying to isolate herself?

My friend is deeply depressed and is trying to cut herself off from me and her other friends. How can I try to help her? Key questions: 1) Any suggestions on how to try to convince her that I genuinely want to stick around and be her friend and it's not just out of obligation, and/or other other ways to respond to her trying to push me away? 2) She's given up on hope of any treatment or improvement-- I think she might be borderline and that DBT could be a good fit for her regardless-- any suggestions of what I could send her about DBT and/or BPD (or anything else) that would have the best chance of getting through to her and giving her hope that things can get better?
