Asking for a character. He has maybe twenty dollars until his next paycheck, and he has to stretch this amount over several days. What would said impoverished hipster buy? He is an alcoholic. It's like 2007. [more inside]
I'm home for the holidays and seeing many friends after years apart. I have five days, each consisting of brunch, lunch and dinner with others, and am looking forward to unimaginable quantities of free alcohol. I am a seasoned (pickled?) drinker that does not normally get hangovers but never have I been on such a social whirlwind with so many opportunities to celebrate. Does anyone have advice for overcoming the potential weaknesses of the flesh to rise to this challenge? Or, how to pace myself when offered so much free deliciousness? Details below [more inside]
I'd like to give someone a bottle of strange/rare/gross booze (it will be appreciated, I promise!). Do you have any suggestions? I'm NOT looking for unusual versions of standard spirits, like rare vintages of bourbon or gross-flavored vodkas, but rather liquors or liqueurs that are themselves weird or unusual. The recipient is very well-versed in booze, so things like genever and Fernet are not quite weird enough. I'm in a major US city and willing to go through some effort for this, so don't hold back!
A film professor friend is compiling a list of movies about drug and alcohol abuse in connection to the creative process. Got any suggestions? [more inside]
Tapioca balls in drinks. Also known as boba. I recently saw a bar advertising alcoholic drinks WITH boba in them. And I said "Well that's dumb. Anyone can do that. Why not put the booze IN the boba?" To which a friend said "well that's impossible." And I said, "Oh yeah? Well I'm going to do it." And then I realized I know nothing about this. So to you. Can booze be injected into a tapioca ball? Can they be soaked in booze? Would that work? Would they soak it up? What would be the best way to make booze filled bobas?
In mid-April, Pips and I will be taking a trip to New Orleans. It's our first time and our hotel is on the fringes of the French Quarter. We've been doing research about places to go (and when the time is right we'll call for a MeFi Meetup), but right now I need inside dope. I wanna know about great places for eating and drinking, especially unknown ones. I'm a big foodie and boozie, so I'm up for just about anything. Thanks in advance.

Hey! I have a long layover in Seoul (landing at Incheon, 5:20AM, departing, 4:30PM, about 11 hours) this Thursday, June 27th. Is it reasonable to head into the city (or somewhere) for food or drink or other amusement in this short span? Can you suggest a micro-itinerary that seems fun to you? I'm also interested in other options, including walking around the city with MeFites.
My brother-in-law will be getting married at the outdoor chapel in Camden, ME in mid-October. Yes, the idea of an outdoor wedding along the seacost of Maine in autumn strikes me as a less-than-ideal plan, but that's a different subject altogether. I will have two weeks for visiting northern New England, so an itinerary of sorts needs developing. And here's where YOU come in! [more inside]
My favorite drink is a Tanqueray and tonic and has been since I was young. In the US, especially as a teenager, people told me that it was a cranky old man drink while marveling at how it glowed under blacklight. I traveled to London once, and a guy there told me that it was a "chick drink". I, of course, don't let what people think of it affect what tasty, tasty alcohol delivery vehicle I choose, but where you are, what's the "reputation" of gin-based drinks? Are they "manly" or "girly"? And how did it gain that reputation? I'm holding a gimlet right now because I've run out of tonic water.
So it's rhubarb season and I've finally managed to buy a big batch, yay! I love the stuff and have been waiting for this all year. I usually make crumbles/stews, but am looking to push the boat out a little more this time to get the most out of it, finding new recipes and also ways to preserve for when it's no longer around (jams, in alcohol, freezing?). What are your favourite recipes and what other things have you found pair well with it? Have you ever made booze with rhubarb? I'd be grateful for any tips, and thank you in advance!
I'm on a low carbohydrate diet and I love cocktails, so I'm trying to figure out the best was to make a simple syrup replacement that tastes decent and has an ok mouth feel. Have you got a go to recipe that doesn't crystallize or have some funky aftertaste? [more inside]
I'm looking for a couple of suggestions of simple, non-summery mixed drinks to try. I love gin and tonics. I'm not a fan of wine or whiskey/bourbon, but I'm willing to try again. In the winter, I usually drink beer, recently IPAs (now that I live in the Pacific Northwest), but I used to prefer brown ales, stouts, and porters. What shall I try when my husband and I go out to a proper bar for drinks tonight? [more inside]

There is only one cocktail that I really, really like. I discovered it by chance at my favorite restaurant, since sadly closed down. I can get people to make it for me but it seems like I always have to explain the recipe three times and I feel there must be a name for it. Unfortunately, I have drawn a blank when visiting cocktail websites. Please help me ID this drink! [more inside]
When I visited my brother in Korea, I fell in love with Maekgeolli. I liked the crisper, almost tart stuff, with more carbonation. Now I'm trying to buy it in Korean markets here in LA, and while they've got a lot of it, I can't seem to navigate the varieties. [more inside]
Before noon booze. Tomato juice gives me heartburn and I don't really want to open a bottle of champagne for two drinks. So, what are the alternative brunch cocktails. NO VODKA DRINKS. Preference for drinks which are not simply an ounce of alcohol added to a glass of juice/cup of hot coffee or chocolate. [more inside]

Cocktail suggestions? If you are normally a manhattan/old fashioned drinker in the winter (and a gin and tonic/gimlet drinker in the summer), and you needed to pick a specialty cocktail to be served in your honor at an autumn cocktail hour, but it could not be a manhattan or old fashioned, what would you pick?
