I have a pair of boots that I like (thanks to AskMe). They recently weathered a flood in which I had the singular pleasure of watching porto-potties float by like boats. I have zero regrets about replacing them if that's the best option, but would rather not do that if I can get them clean inside and out. So I'm asking for the best way to do that, or if there is a good way at all.
I'm trying to find a boot as similar as possible to this Red Wing Beckman boot (similar cut, color, sole thickness, etc.), but available in a U.S. men's size 15. Anyone know of something that fits the bill?
Not one but two Macs refuse to boot, getting stuck on the grey Apple logo screen. What can I do and what could have possibly caused this?? [more inside]
I have a laptop (Toshiba A105 S4344) with a windows xp install and a bootable USB clip with Win7 on it. I want to put Windows 7 on the laptop. If I take the hard drive out then the USB clip boots fine (but has no hard drive to install windows on). If I put the hard drive in then it runs windows off the HD even though USB boot is ahead of it in the BIOS startup order (and when I put a blank hard drive in then it complained it couldn't find the windows startup files). And when I try and insert the HD after loading Win7 off the USB, the installer can't see the hard drive. I've checked the BIOS and there aren't any secure boot/UEFI shenanigans going on. I will probably end up burning the win7 install onto a dvd, but does anyone know why the Toshiba would be overriding the boot order?
I am looking for a polishable black workboot, no steel-toe, light weight, around 6 inch height. I walk between 4 and 10 miles over the course of a 12 hour shift, 5 or 6 days a week. Equal time indoors and outdoors, the weather ranges from snow-sun with a fair number of deluge days, so water proof or VERY resistant is a must. These shoes must fit in with a dress uniform, but I'm working for a railroad, not a bank.
I tried to install linux on a win8 laptop and failed although I tried everything to disable UEFI and security boot options in Bios. So I think there is no solution to install Linux on certain win8 Laptops. But someone told me of course I can install Linux on any win8 laptops by using virtualbox. So I'm wondering why can it be done? How exactly is virtualbox/virtual machine works for this issue? can anybody explain this to me in a easy to understand way? Thanks very much.
So, I found a short boot I'd love to get, but nowhere that's stocking it will ship to Greece. Can you either find someplace that will (highly doubtful; I've searched a lot), or help me find one very, very, very similar? [more inside]
So, my wife's computer stopped booting the other day. Nothing happening on the monitor, hard drive whirrs away in a repetitive pattern for as long as we want to let it go. [more inside]
I have a PCI-E SSD as my boot drive, and a win7-created RAID 1 on two 3TB drives. My boot drive has my user folder on it, but my documents, music, pictures, videos, etc folders shortcut to their respectable folders on the RAID. I would like this to be a full redundancy scheme and it is, but I've run into several nags and I would like to know how to fix them and prepare a fix-it plan before any of the drives fails. My friend's laptop runs windows 7. After resetting last night she's getting an Operating System Not Found error during boot. Assuming the hard drive hasn't completely failed, what are the best, simplest tools she can use to either fix the problem or at least get her important data off the drive? She has access to another computer with a cd/dvd burner, an 8GB USB flash drive, and blank cds. She doesn't have access to the system restore disc or anything like that. She can get a blank DVD if that's simplest. I was leaning toward Knoppix as the Linux distribution for a live dvd, but if there's an easier way I'd love to hear it. Thanks.
my computer froze, and when i tried to reboot it, it got to the green suse screen proceeded normally, and then when it went forward, i got an error message that said could not start "kdeinit4. check your installation" tried to fix it using the protocal i found here but sitll have the same problems with the error message. I hadn't plugged in my computer for about 5 months, because I had a laptop, but the laptop is on it's last legs, but it was working pretty well for the last couple of days.
Someone recently emailed me trying to track down a short story he remembered reading as a kid (in Johannesburg, 1970). He thought it might be by Roald Dahl. I told him that I'm 99.9% sure it's not by Dahl, just on the basis that I've read everything he ever published. The story sounds interesting though (something about a doll's house and playing God), and I'd like to try to help him track it down if I can. Does it ring a bell for anybody? Plot description follows. [more inside]

I would like to make a custom boot disc that is very simple to the user. All it would do is restore an image from 6 DVDs to a hard drive. The only options I would like the user to see is: 1) format drive 2) restore drive 3) exit I would like to create this menu and all sub menus that I see fit. I have seen UBCD but it is too complicated for the people I know. I would like to use Driveimage XML and have it read the discs one at a time to restore the drive. Any suggestions?
