My kids (currently 6 and 9) have become voracious readers. We have a large and varied collection of excellent fiction for them, but the non-fiction collection is more haphazard. They love learning new facts as they read (the type of thing that makes them look up from the book and say, "Did you know...?"). I want to make sure that the collection of books gives them a good introduction to fields where I myself may not have enough knowledge to judge the quality/accuracy of the book. So what's the kid's book in your field that makes you say, "If only every kid got to read this book, people would understand [topic] better."?

I spent 4 years learning French in high school, and have retained just enough since then to vaguely eavesdrop on a fellow commuter's French novel the other day. I would like to brush up on my reading comprehension, and could use some suggestions for some simply written fiction to pick up.

I'm very interested in world religions. I have picked up a few titles but I find them extremely difficult I am hoping people here can recommend some starter titles. I am a masters degree educator. I know very little on this subject and I seem to get it twisted quickly. Please recommend titles to start reading to build upon.

Moving to Peachtree Accounting from Quickbooks, need to learn some basics fast and well: transactions, different account types (checking, credit, A/R), creating and tracking invoices. Print books cost $$$, are unreviewable, and aren't available quickly. I'd like to get this done today. Advice? Am I making a mistake?

If I buy an English book that has been translated into Spanish, does it matter for which Spanish-speaking country it was translated? In other words, if my intention is to learn Castilian-Spanish, is it better to find book translated for Spain? If so, how do I find such books? How do you know what version of Spanish a book is based on?

Recommend some French-language books (or sites) for a intermediate French-learner, to (hopefully enjoy) reading with the aid of a dictionary and bescherelle.

I am pretty terrible when it comes to picking up technology books with the desire to learn about something. I always lose steam at some point. I am asking for tips/tricks/disciplines to get better, especially if you've noticed a difficulty doing this and turned yourself around. Is it possible that I am simply the type who needs to go to a class or learn through on the job training? Or is there a way to get better?

I would like to learn about an interesting aspect of history which is new to me. This could be broad ('Ancient Greece') or very specific ('Anarchists in the Ukraine in the Russian Revolution'), thematic ('the Victorian underworld and crime') or about a location ('Venice') - but I'd like to also know
why your suggestion interests you so much. If you can recommend some good books on your suggested topic, that would be just perfect.

I'd like to learn Math. I'm particularly interested in learning trig and calculus. I'm don't need to learn these disciplines for any purpose. I'm just interested. I'm a reasonably bright guy, with a logical mind (I've worked as a programmer), and I'm a good self-learner. I'm not in a rush (don't mind working at this for a few years). What books/resources would you recommend? I should probably go all the way back to Algebra, which is pretty much where I left off in High School years ago.
