Is it possible to disable the "most visited / recent history" tab in the Google Chrome browser? I can set Chrome so that it loads a blank page on startup, but when opening a tab it displays all my most visited sites. This inspired one very embarrassing moment when a friend unconsciously CTRL-Tabbed and saw a glaring menu of my darkest internet meanderings. Several sites claim to be able to solve this but no instructions I have yet followed have made any difference.

Does anyone know if Google Browser Sync has finally been 'retired'? I know that the add-on hasn't been available for download since mid-2008. Google indicated that they'd continue to make the facility available throughout 2008. When connecting this morning, I got a '502: Bad Gateway' alert, indicating that an error had occurred and suggesting 'try again later'. I'm aware of alternative solutions, thanks; I just want to know if there's any official word to indicate that Google has withdrawn the service, in which case I'll migrate to Foxmarks or Mozilla Weave. So far I haven't been able to confirm my suspicions, so I thought I'd wave to the MeFite community for assistance.

How are people organizing their information (professional and personal) in this day and age? What kind of system is flexible enough to cope with multiple data types (PDFs, DOCs, short text notes, hyperlinks, ...), efficient during collection (when browsing the Web, when reading documents, ...) and won't get in my way when I try to use it?

Is there a way to back up Firefox bookmarks as a regular "folder" of shortcut (url) files? I know this is possible in IE - it stores the favorites as shortcut files (or at least it used to, I haven't used it in ages), so it was a simple copy and paste job. In Firefox, the only thing I can figure out how to do is export an HTML file with links to all my bookmarks. This is annoying and useless to me.

My Firefox updated recently and now a dialog box pops up occasionally titled, "Foxmarks Bookmark Synchronizer." It says, "Please enter your username and password to continue." I have no username or password for Firefox. My computer is not on a network. I cancel out of this and continue, only to have it pop up again a short time later. As far as I can see, synchronization of bookmarks isn't in the help files. How do I disable this?

I just bought a MacBook Pro after my dead Toshiba. Interesting. Different. I installed Firefox and moved my bookmarks from my XP computer. But now they're all screwed up on the Mac! They had been ordered alphabetically with the folders full of links on top, but now the folders are on the bottom (having ordered them alphabetically on the Mac). XP keeps folders together and Mac doesn't, it seems (this seems also to be the case in the "Finder"). Let me know if I'm missing something.... Please float my folders....

I am
a del.icio.us power use, and I am trying to use the new Firefox 2.0 which integrates with del.icio.us. I'm having some trouble. First, all of the bookmarks I had stored locally that were in folders seem to have disappeared. Where did they go? Second, because I have soooo many bookmarks on del.icio.us, I have the "Bookmaek synching in progress" bar loading constantly, and it REALLY slows down my Firefox speed.
Can anyone help me find my missing bookmarks? Does anyone have tips on how to use Firefox 2.0 with bookmarks without the molasses speed?

Help me keep certain, um, *embarrassing* bookmarks private in Firefox. I'm looking for something that will password-protect or hide some but not all of my browser bookmarks -- in Firefox, NOT in a web-based solution (delicious, Bookmarks Synchronizer, FoxMarks, etc). Sharing or synchronization is not the issue, just privacy on my PC.
