My grandfather wrote a successful buck in the early '40s. He passed away about ten years ago, and just recently I've gotten the urge to see if it would be possible to release the book to Project Gutenberg and also maybe do a Librivox recording. How does one go about finding out about who owns copyrights in this kind of situation?

Why isn't the sequel to The Glass Books of the Dream Eaters out in America yet when it's already published in the UK? The UK published the first book after America did, so why would the UK publish the sequel first now? Is it even going to be published in the US? Help me, booksellers and those knowledgeable in publishing! [more inside]

How much does the spine of a book cover affect sales? My partner has just had a book published, but the publishers put an earlier draft cover design on by mistake. The main difference is on the spine, where the title is slightly wrong and the text placement is different making the title unreadable by anyone browsing the shelves. [more inside]

I recently bought a paperback book from an antique shop. The book's called The Mystery of Love, Courtship and Marriage Explained, and it was written by Henry J. Wehman, published by Wehman Bros. But there's no copyright date! Anywhere! In any form! The cover looks like it's a "newer" edition (1920's or so) of an older writing, since the writing uses language and refers to customs that seem outdated even for the early 20th century. There are details such as proper flirting with your parasol, the inappropriateness of women's rights meetings, marrying outside of your social class, calling your husband "Mister" instead of his first name, etc. The word "hugging" (not the act itself) is even called a vulgarity. So, it's old. But how old? How can I find out when this was actually written? Google turns up nada. [more inside]

I'm considering writing a book about game systems in the 80's and would like to be able to include screenshots of many of the games. What do I need to do to be able to include those screenshots without being sued? Does this fall under the copyright law's "fair use"? Does the fact that they are older games make any difference? Apologies if this has been asked before - I couldn't find anything related to publishing game screenshots.
