Looking for movies and books where engineers did their jobs right

In many spy or action movies, the technical systems seem to be designed by total idiots. Especially everything concerned with nuclear weapons. While this creates an easy and straightforward plot, it destroys my suspension of disbelief more severely than if talking unicorns just walked into the scene. I'm looking for fiction with systems designed by sane people. Inexplacible things, utter idiocy and madness may exist, but should be acknowledged as such in-universe. Spoilers for "Olympus has fallen" inside. [more inside]

Book and movie name

What is the name of the book and movie about a simple-minded, poor man who lived with his mother, carried a pet bird with him and gets innocently involved in an social uprising? I think he discovered gold near the beginning and his clothes are tattered.

Looking for examples of a literary trope translated to a visual medium

Sometimes in a novel, you will have Character A and Character B. Fast forward to the big twist that Character A and Character B ARE THE SAME PERSON! Obviously this doesn't work when the novel is adapted for the screen, and I'm looking for examples of adaptations that had to deal with this, and how they dealt with it, and any sort of critique of how it was dealt with in the movie/television show. (Spoilers of all sorts inside) [more inside]

Should I read Hunger Games 1? I've already seen the movie.

Stupid question: Should I read Hunger Games 1? I've already seen the movie. This is normally a no-brainer because usually book >> movie: in this case, I have seen the movie first and have the book on-hand already, plus tonight I have a book swap and dibs on many other books that I don't know yet! Bonus: your opinion on reading parts 2&3.

What adventure fiction is set in a nomadic culture?

What books and movies feature fantasy or adventure in a nomadic culture? I just watched the movie Mongol, and it really reminded me of how much I enjoyed the enjoyed the Daenerys chapters in the Song of Ice and Fire series. I guess I'm attracted to the idea of warring tribes, of only owning whatever you can carry with you, etc. What other exciting works of fiction use this kind of society as a background?

Looking for good historical dramas

Looking for good historical dramas, especially ones where the main character sticks to his/her principles, regardless of the consequences. Watched Matewan (John Sayles) recently, as an example. Movies or books would do.
