Please recommend your favorite stores for books for kids in Chicago. I am interested in finding used books, quirky books, and progressive books. Not necessarily all three and not necessarily in that order. Toddler Xalf is almost 1.5 years old, but I'm happy to buy books that will be over his head for the next few of years.
Any part of Chicago is fine. Suburbs too, especially those to the north.

My daughter is 13 yo & is a pretty good artist. She is extremely creative & she has compiled a great deal of pictures that she has drawn. What i find incredibly unique about these pictures, is that they are all of Puns... like "Running out of time" with somebody running out of a giant clock.... etc., etc., etc...
Again, they are VERY unique. Every time i look at them, she's added a few, and they are all very clever. I thought it would be terrific if she could compile them together... with either captions under each, or even putting some words to them to create a short story...etc.
Thereby, resulting in a book... based on these puns, the target audience would be around her age (say maybe 10 yo or so) & up.
How would i go about or rather who would i contact, to present it to a publishing company?
I welcome all thoughts & suggestions!

Children's novel: Protagonist is the son of deceased missionaries, retaining only a comforter and a photograph. He lives with an aunt and uncle, and the plot concerns his reintegration into non-missionary society. Setting is an island in New England, and there are scenes of driving on the ice in the winter to get to the mainland. [more inside]

Does anyone remember the name of a children's book that was a cautionary tale against air pollution?
I remember it being a soft cover book w/ that was short and wide. Pictures of factory(s) and people getting and wearing gas masks (as well as dogs)! I can't remember the ending but hopefully my description suffices.

Trying to find/remember a childrens book from my childhood (I'm 33) in which there were either hippos or elephants having a run-in with an evil sultan. I think the animals got shoved into a tarpit or something - a bit intense....

I need help finding a (British?) children's book from the mid 1980's. It was an introduction to colour theory under the guise of a storybook. It had great transparent plastic pages that you could overlay to see the effects of subtractive colour spaces. I don't remember what the story was about, but there were lots of balloons.
