I've been racking my brain trying to remember a book I liked when I was a kid. As I recall it was a small chapter book, with a reading level somewhere in the 2nd - 3rd grade range. It was about a group of forest animals, and I think most or all of them were nocturnal. The main one was a flying squirrel. [more inside]

I'm looking for board books that do not just portray white children. Books appropriate for ages 1-4 would be fine, but I'm buying for a 2-year-old so a bit on the simpler side is better. Thank you!

Please recommend your favorite stores for books for kids in Chicago. I am interested in finding used books, quirky books, and progressive books. Not necessarily all three and not necessarily in that order. Toddler Xalf is almost 1.5 years old, but I'm happy to buy books that will be over his head for the next few of years.
Any part of Chicago is fine. Suburbs too, especially those to the north.

I'm looking for a book meant for small children, probably around age 6, about adoption. The cover pictures a white couple with two adopted (non-caucasian, I think, probably of different races) children. It would have been available at least in 1987-1990 (kind of fuzzy on the year) in New Jersey or thereabouts, USA. It was an English language book. [more inside]

I've got another "what was that thing from my childhood?" sort of question, and I've combed through Google and Amazon and Abebooks to no avail. A book of short quirky poems for children, probably illustrated. Mid 1970s. Very likely published by Scribners, we had tons of their hardcover books from an uncle who worked there (now deceased, so I can't ask him.) I thought
the title was "It May Be So, It May Be Not", which was also the title of a poem in the book that went, either partially or entirely... [more inside]

Children's novel: Protagonist is the son of deceased missionaries, retaining only a comforter and a photograph. He lives with an aunt and uncle, and the plot concerns his reintegration into non-missionary society. Setting is an island in New England, and there are scenes of driving on the ice in the winter to get to the mainland. [more inside]

Looking for a very specific book of yoga positions for children - it was simply written and the illustrations were black ink line drawings on white paper, usually of young people and adults doing introductory yoga positions.
My mother used the book with my brother and myself regularly in the 1970s, but looking through the various kids' yoga books on Amazon now I'm not finding it. Anyone who grew up in the same era, or who raised kids in the same era, find this familiar?

Can anyone help my 8 year old daughter remember a particular children's book that made an impression on her?
I don't have much to go on, but the story seems to revolve around a boy (and possibly a dog) who live in a village(?) at a time when bombing is happening (suggesting WWII?). The boy spends a lot of time watching trains (skipping school to do so) and dreams of going to his grandmother's house until he eventually runs away on one after some problems at home (possibly involving the police).
While on the train he meets a family *on the top*(?) of the train and befriends a girl who is like a servant/slave to the family.
She thinks she read it in the last year or so and I guess it would be appropriate for her age.
Any ideas what the book might be?
Thanks in advance!
(note that I suspect the book is by a British author)

I am looking for a book or a movie geared at younger kids (mine is 7), that would start a conversation about things not always being as they appear. Kinda like how toys on TV never end up to be as cool as they look, or how some people make promises that sound good, but they just don't deliver. I'd like to help my daughter start to develop the intelligence and skill set to truly discern the difference between substance and smoke.

Sci-fi novel about children held captive with woman in a castle after being placed with her through a government forced foster system (children are lent out to childless people for one month).
