I have a Panasonic Blu-ray player. It is probably 5-6 years old.
Lately I notice the picture quality on some older standard DVDs (Six feet under season 1 for example) don't look good. They either look grainy/pixelated/not crisp.
The other problem that I have is that Blu-rays take foreeeeeeever to load. The new season of Mad Men must take 5 minutes at least. It does look great once it gets started.
I am not an overly tech savvy person. I don't know if I need to update firmware (or how to do it for that matter). I would rather have something that either doesn't require it or does it automatically. I do have a brand new Samsung smart hd tv. I am using HDMI cables.
Is there a way/is it worth updating or trying to "fix" It seems that players are so inexpensive that perhaps I should just purchase a new one. Would this solve the problem? Do todays units update themselves like I believe that my tv does? I see that some come with wi-fi included. Some are smart. I don't know what the advantage to those features are. I don't care about 3D. Is HDMI still the standard?
Would it be advantageous to stick with Samsung?
Thank you in advance

Looking for a basic DVD + Blu-Ray player with HDMI. Doesn't need any kind of network streaming (TV and other devices handle that already). Ideally under $100. Am okay with buying used off craigslist or something if the model is known to be pretty reliable. Suggestions?

[DVD/Blu-Ray Commentary Filter]What compels the star(s)/director/producer/whomever to do commentary for a DVD/Blu-Ray release? Are they paid for that session of sitting and watching the movie while miked up? Or are they just hoping for more sales for their share of the back-end? Or is this just out of the goodness of their heart (particularly on "anniversary" releases)?

Can you help me get my Cox Cable universal remote (M7820) to play nice with my Sony Blu-ray player (BDP-S380 / BX38)? Both Sony and Cox tech support tell me there are no remote codes in existence to program into the Cox remote. That just sounds ludicrous to me...what's up?
I know how to program the remote, just need the proper code.

Help me build my perfect home media machine. It must play blu-ray discs, browse the web, and stream HD video from internet sources. I have no interest in video games, and little interest in cable TV. Is this something I can buy? If this is something I must build myself, what kind of computing muscle will I need? [more inside]

37" widescreen LCDTV viewed from 12' away, do my eyes have the resolving power to justify getting a Blu-ray instead of upscaling DVD player? [more inside]

Please, tell me who is winning the format war between HD DVD and Blu-ray. Both data and (well-founded and -referenced) opinion welcome.
