What kind of snake are you mister?

Help me identify this snake we found on our deck in Bloomington, Indiana? We found the snake's skin this morning wrapped around the deck railing. The skin wasn't there yesterday. It measures just shy of 52 inches long. We didn't see the snake until midday, but now it's basking on our elevated deck. We just moved to Indiana, so we're don't know the local snakes. Extra credit for tips on how to co-exist with this snake, but keep it out of our house.

Bloomington, Indiana question: I'm in Bloomington for an intensive language course for the next 2 months. Ideas on things to do, places to eat, general living advice? I read this post, but it was more for a short stay. I'm subletting a place with a 10-15 minute walk to both campus and downtown. My subleter left me her bike to borrow. I have no car.

As far as food, I'm into organic and not too keen on meat.

I'll be in class about 20-30 hours a week, but with afternoons free. I'll be trying to work a few hours each week as well, oh, and I need time to write my dissertation. So it isn't like I have tons of free time to explore.

Things to do in Bloomington, IL. Next Wednesday I will be flying to Bloomington, IL for some job training. I'll have all Wednesday evening after about 6 PM and all Thursday evening after about 5 PM. I know Bloomington is the home of the Beer Nuts factory (w00t!) but what else is there to do in the evenings? Difficulty: Probably no rental car unless there's something spectacular worth driving to.
