Innovative websites as template/model for MFA research community

I'm looking for examples of websites that have successfully enhanced a research community (academic or artistic) with a dynamic online/social/mutual-portfolio presence. Blog and social media based hubs, perhaps, that showcase the possibilities of web portfolio/research integration for academic and creative purposes. [more inside]

Looking for good, easy to set up 'Content Management Community' web-software

Web-Design-Filter: I am looking for a free (or very cheap) and easy to use Content Management System that I can use to set up a private, dynamic blog, content and community space for multiple users. I would be willing to look at Wordpress type software bases, but would like to integrate something of the functionality of lifestream systems like Facebook and Sweetcron/Tumblr. [more inside]

Before Etsy: What was that DIY trading community from way back when?

Years ago (2002? 2003?), long before Etsy, there was an online community for DIY/crafty blogger types to trade materials and maybe handmade goods as well. What was it called, and what happened to it? [more inside]

What are the benefits and drawbacks of hosting blogging software on a domain separate from a blog's domain?

What are the benefits and drawbacks of hosting blogging software on a domain separate from a blog's domain? The only advantage I see is that it keeps my blog's log files clear of my MovableType 3.11 installation, resulting in cleaner traffic reports. I see no disadvantages. Is it better to just make subdomain for the software installation?

Bloggery Mystery

This is an embarassingly simple question, but after plowing through the Internet Explorer prefs, I can't find the answer.

When using blogger, a small window is left on your screen with a "close" button. When you click on it, a warning pops up: "this web page is trying to close your window and do strange things to your cat." and then you have to click a confirmation button.

Yeah, yeah, I know I can close the window three other ways, but for weak, idiosyncratic reasons would like to just click on that "close" button.

(why do I feel like"Monk" here...)
