Make My Hyper-Local Blog Community Friendly!

I run a hyper-local blog about Penn State . I want to create a new area in which our readers can post content, similar to Gawker's #tips area but with a share box like Facebook's. Other Details
*** We're using the latest version of Wordpress. One thought I had was maybe to switch to Wordpress MU, keep the standard blog intact, but then create another Wordpress system for the user generated content?

*** I'd really like this to be smooth (i.e. AJAX) and extendable... Facebook and Twitter integration would be awesome, as would the ability to upload pictures and embed videos.

*** While having to moderate posts individually wouldn't be a big deal, I'd prefer if we could get a CAPTCHA set up for the system.

*** The ability to rate content submissions, or comment, would be awesome.

I need a specific CMS that allows each user to edit one part of a page.

I need a page of bios integrated into a WordPress site. I would like to give each person the ability to update his own bio without letting him mess with other people's bios. It would be awesome if the list was alphabetized. In other words, if you visit the bio page, you'll see something like this:

Fred Alberts has worked at Acme for five years. He lives in New Jersey...

Alice Jordan loves the NY Times Crossword and...

Peter Smith is a gourmet chef who has lived in London and Paris...

If, say, Alice no longer likes the crossword puzzles, I would like her to be able to log in someplace and change her bio, but I don't want her to be able to change Fred's bio.

This system will slowly grow in terms of me adding more people. Currently, there are about 100 people. I will probably add about ten more people to it each year. These people will regularly want to update their bios, and I don't want them to have to email me each time they want a change made.

Ultimately, I want all the bios on to be on one page of a Wordpress blog.

Is this something that exists already, or do I have to code it myself?

Slow & Steady

Why is my website loading slowly, and how can I fix it? My blog (linked from my profile page) seems to load incredibly slowly (sometimes taking up to a minute), even though it's not a content heavy site.

Things that may be relevant:

the blog is Wordpress v. 2.0.4

the admin page for the blog loads up just fine, with no delay

it used to be hosted at the .com version of the url, but after a brief scare in which I lost access to that url (though it was later regained) it was switched to .org, and I'm not certain that I changed absolutely everything that ought to have been

the page displays my Twitter feed, which is the main content that resides on the main page and comes from outside the site itself

Why is it loading slowly, and what can I do to fix it?

del.icio.us --> wordpress

Import delicious.com links to wordpress as 'blog entries' - how? I do not want a feed of my delicious data in my wordpress. I want to migrate all of my delicious data to wordpress. There are plenty of tools to migrate other formats into wordpress. There's nothing particularly exotic about delicious data. I'm going to guess a tool doesn't already exist because of a mental disconnect. delicious is thought of as a bookmark service, wordpress is thought of as a blog / site manager. But my delicious data is made up of (short) 'blog entires' - title, URL, notes, date, categories, etc. Importing this data shouldn't be any more difficult than importing blogger data, for example. But I've been stumped for over a year, and those I've paid to find an answer for me have failed. delicious is not a tiny or obscure service, yet... I'm just not having any success. No success either in converting delicious to something else and then converting that something else to wordpress. Many thanks in advance.

Hosted Blog or DIY?

My boss would like to start a blog. He already has a domain. We're unsure as to whether to use something like Wordpress to host, or to install it (or Moveable Type?) ourselves. Opinions? He is also a bit concerned with search engine optimization. The concern is that google (and others) will not recognize that a hosted blog (pointing to his domain) is a PART of the domain, but appear as another domain altogether (Wordpress'?). Basically he would like the blog to come up when people google our business name. It would be tagged appropriately, he is just concerned that using a partially hosted service would dilute the connection to the domain. Hopefully that makes sense!

He will be using the blog for weekly/monthly/etc newsletters, posting pictures, links, etc. He is also concerned about being able to use his own fonts. It seems to be that this should be possible, but I'm not so up on the server side of blog hosting (or any hosting). What is our best bet here?

I have been getting weird Wordpress referrer spam the last 4 days, but there are no injections or anything of the like on my site. I have a site running wordpress. No comments or users, I'm using it as a simple CMS.

I'm using the StatPress plugin to check out who is coming to the site. This morning, I noticed an abnormally large number of visitors the last few days.

People seem to be visiting pages like mysite.com/?myfjkfosljfsfjd (NB : not a string I've seen, just an example). When clicked, it will go to my homepage. Checking the source, there is nothing out of the ordinary (no spam links, etc). If you google that end string by itself, you get one result, to my site, with a summary that lists a whole bunch of viagra type words.

Any idea what is going on, and how I can stop this?

I was running 2.8.2, upgraded to 2.8.3 this morning.

You can get my details from my userpage if you want specifics.

Is there a Wordpress widget that will automatically sort the links in my sidebar by date?

Is there a Wordpress widget that will automatically sort the links in my sidebar by date? If not, how would I code one? Basically, I'm looking to duplicate the Waxy Links sidebar in a Wordpress theme. I'm currently building a theme in Wordpress 2.8, and the Links widget does about 80% of what I want. (Yes, I have asked this on the Wordpress forum, but the question was competing with the other 8 million questions and have recieved no feedback.)

However, what I'd really like is the following workflow:

I add a new link with the links widget (or alternative) and publish.

The link shows up in the sidebar under a header with the date. Any additional links posted that day would also show up here.

For bonus points, it would be nice if there were some auto-cutoff, so after 25 posted links or so, the oldest links would disappear as the new ones were added

I'm reasonably code savvy, so no fear of php, css, etc. I'm just hoping there's a canned solution that's easy to implement.

Politely communicating that your site needs a total makeover

How does a lowly unpaid blog contributor tell his/her bosses that the whole site needs a major redesign? I've had the privilege of being invited to contribute for my former employer's new blog, and I've been enjoying producing some content on a weekly basis or so as part of a team of 5-6 people. However, their entire content management system is archaic, buggy, and needs a major systematic and aesthetic overhaul. I'm talking no RSS feed, disappearing posts, a comment system that doesn't even allow users to leave their names. Worst of all, I have a sneaking suspicion that I'm the only person involved in this whole project who is tech-savvy enough to be aware of solutions such as Wordpress that could fix this situation (or Drupal, if they wanted to fix their whole site.) And I'm no IT expert myself.

I'm having to balance my distaste (to put it mildly) for the way they're running this new blog with my admiration for the organization in general for allowing me to contribute, as well as my important and delicate professional relationship with them. The main communications/IT person has served as a reference on job applications in the past, and I care very deeply about how these important contacts view me if I end up working in their industry full-time in the future. I just graduated college and lack full-time employment, so I know that having this opportunity is an important privilege and professional and personal relationship I would never want to damage.

I guess this is a question not only as to whether I should or should not say something, but if I should, a question of communication. How can I express that their site, particularly this blog, has such an outdated look and feel that it must be negatively impacting their credibility without sounding like a snooty, ungrateful young upstart? Can I offer to help them redesign their site, or at least get them a Wordpress, without sounding or acting like I know better than they do? Is there a way to avoid the risks and pitfalls of this situation besides shutting up and putting up with this web 0.5 silliness? Similar experiences and suggestions for content management systems or blog hosting sites are also welcome.
I've got a spare blogger blog ('domainname'.blogspot.com) with the same name as a wordpress blog('samedomainname'.com).... what could i do with it? bonus points for income generation. i got a gmail account to work as a spam filter for the domain email and, obviously, i get a free blogger account to go with it.
Attack of the spam

A particular post on my (wordpress) blog just got hit with over 10 spam comments in 3 minutes. I've disabled comments on that post for now, but what's going on? These aren't the typical website-pimping viagra-toting comments - they're all along the same lines - for example "Thank you for this site, such as multi information! Thank you!", "Oh hell yeah", "nice post, thanks for sharing" etc. Also, the authors have similar sounding addresses - either host238-96-dynamic.16-87-r.retail.telecomitalia.it or 84.123.82.200.dyn.user.ono.com with different numbers at the beginning, sorry I don't know the correct terminology.

I have Akismet enabled and can't remember the last time it let through one spam comment, never mind 10 in the space of a couple of minutes..

Why is this happening, and what should I do about it?
thanks!

Altering Wordpres's Dashboard CSS

Which .css file to I need to edit within my Wordpress 2.8 installation to prevent an annoying Dashboard layout issue, and what information do I need to change? When viewing the Wordpress Dashboard in Firefox, the menu on the left slightly overlaps the rest of the page, when it's expanded. Like this. When it's shrunk, the layout is correct. Like this.

Annoyingly, it all looks fine in Internet Explorer.

What values do I need to change in which .css file to ensure that there's no overlap?

The title sequences and credits are looking blurry on the videos I'm posting to WordPress. I need to find out the tricks to posting the best quality video possible to my blog, but I'm new to this. Help! To show you what I'm talking about, look at the video that's currently on the front page of my site. See how the titles and credits look like crap? It's KILLING me. (Don't judge the video please. Yes, I've ordered a tripod. Don't have one yet.) I've searched the web for advice on this but haven't found any tips yet.

I'd never done this stuff before so I've been learning everything the hard way. I'm using the Modularity theme from Graph Paper Press, and it has a function to "post HD video." They say to take a MOV and save it as a FLV. I created the movie in imovie and then saved it for web (should I save it as something else? I liked the sound quality better on the "CD" format, but it was a larger file). I downloaded Sorenson Squeeze to try various formats of FLV. The file got SO much larger after it was turned into an FLV that I couldn't upload it to wordpress... I can only upload things that are less than 8MB. So that was frustrating. I tried 1MB, 2mb, 768, 512... this particular video was saved as "medium."

Since I'm a graphic designer at heart, this blurry type is physically paining me. I want to get better at this stuff so down the road it can look really good, clean, crisp, and sound nice too. Thanks in advance for your expertise. :)

Who's reading?

How can I juice up a foo.wordpress.com site? Specifically I want a better statcounter, but any other cool stuff you recommend would be nice, too. I have a blog at nameofblog.wordpress.com. I'm planning to move it to nameofblog.com, but that's not high on my priority list at the moment. In the meantime, I'd like to know more about my stats, but I'm not sure which is the best free stat tracker for a Wordpress.com site. Right now all I see on the default tracker are pageviews, referring links, and the posts that get the most clicks. But those "most clicks" numbers only add up to about 20% of my daily pageviews, which... huh?

Specifically, I'd like to know:
How many people are following on RSS
Stats by city & country
Average length of visit
Any other stats you'd think I might find interesting.

All this stuff used to be easy to track on Blogger blogs with StatCounter, but I don't understand how to put a different stat tracker on Wordpress (I'm using the Contempt template, and I don't know how to edit CSS). Anyone have a suggestion of an easy, free way for me to satisfy my stats curiosity until I have time to customize the whole site? Ease of use is key, though- my knowledge of programming is scant, by which I mean I know maybe 10 HTML tags and that's about it.

While we're at it, I guess I'd also be interested in hearing about any Wordpress.com site goodies you know about that are cool & easy to use, but not widely known.
Thanks!

I'm having trouble implementing the Wordpress audio player plugin on my website. Please help a baffled man. I've installed the Wordpress audio player plugin on my website, but for the life of me I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong -- it's not showing up on the page.

I'm writing the page using the "html" setting on the wordpress control panel, and I'm following the instructions listed under "usage" in the 1pixelout link above. The file I'm trying to play is definitely in the folder I'm directing the player to (I'm hosted, it's not just a WP blog); I can link to it conventionally (as in, without the player).

The only change I made was to change the audio files directory path from "/audio" to "/uploads." I've even tried checking the box (in the audio player controls on my WP control panel) that replaces all links to mp3 files with a player instance. Didn't work.

Can someone help me out here? I have a feeling there's some extremely minor thing I'm doing wrong, so don't think I'm too foolish. Thanks.

What's the right software to maintain and display a calendar of relatively infrequent future events?

What's the right software to maintain and display a calendar of relatively infrequent future events, as well as blog-like news postings? I maintain a website for specialists in my field of mathematics, and one section consists of announcements for upcoming and recent conferences. Another is for news announcements: a basic blog-style list of entries. Both are currently run by our 7-year-old Movable Type installation, in combination with a good bit of chewing gum and baling twine. I'd like to redesign the whole schmear, including the back end. Is wordpress (plus more gum and twine) the right solution? Is there some other system that makes more sense? Link.

Here's the current setup, which hasn't changed since launch in 2002: Movable Type runs two blogs: "News" and "Conferences". The former is your basic blog, except that we only show one entry on the front page, and generally have only an entry a month or so.

Each entry in "Conferences" is added when we learn about it, and post-dated to the first day of the conference. This system works ok, since most conferences are just a day or two, but there are some that are a week, month, or even a semester long, and this causes problems. When first posted, they're in an "upcoming" category that displays in one place, then changed by hand to a "past" category that shows up in another place when they're past. Drawback: I often forget to change the category, which makes me look stupid. We average about 3 conferences a month, though they tend to cluster in March, June, and October. Lead time is up to a year.

I'd like to redesign and bring it up to web-2.whateverwe'reuptonow snuff, both in front and behind. Wordpress seems to be the default these days. I could do the same acrobatics to get the conferences into wordpress, I guess, but it sure seems like there should be a better way. Do you know of one?

I run this out of my pocket and in my free time, so free and drop-in solutions are best, but if you've got good ideas, lay 'em on me.

Facebook + Organization Page + Import blog

Facebook + Organization Page + Import blog. Is it possible? So I built a fancy Wordpress-based site for a local non-profit and I want to give them a Facebook presence as well. I created a page for them on Facebook which is what you're supposed to do for organizations or businesses. Now how do I import their blog into the page? I saw this previous AskMe, but that doesn't seem to apply to organization pages, at least I can't find an Import Blog option. Is there a way to do this? I was hoping they wouldn't have to even log into Facebook - just updating their blog would trigger an update on Facebook.

Where to find a custom Wordpress theme designer?

Help me find a professional and inexpensive Wordpress theme designer for my small law firm client's redesigned website. I can't seem to find one anywhere! I have a small law firm client that is looking to redesign their website. I'd like to have it created on the Wordpress platform to make it easy for them to update and add content on their own.

I've been checking on WarriorForum for freelance designers but so far no luck. Where can I go to find a good freelance Wordpress theme designer who has a strong understanding of what is needed to make a nice law firm site (and not some crappy theme I could buy for $5 off any old theme site)?

Of course there's a catch...I need this done cheap ($100-200 max) as I am eating the costs of this (long story, don't ask).

I would be providing the designer with a full strategic creative brief, architecture and direction throughout the project but want someone who can do a competent job on the coding and making it optimized for search.

Where can I send out requests? Also, if you fit the needs here, post a link to your portfolio and I'll be sure to take a look.

I'm not opposed to outsourcing this to India via Rentacoder or eLance or something like that, but I've never used them and have no idea how to tell if a company is reputable or not or whether they'll be able to do a good job and have a good understanding of english.

Ideally I'd like to find someone locally in Chicago but they'll probably charge a lot more.

Importing data (and hard returns), Movable Type to Wordpress

How do I get WordPress to recognize hard returns when importing Movable Type data? I'm in the process of setting up my blog using WordPress 2.7.1 (migrating from Movable Type 4.2.3). I was able to import all of my entries no problem, but I'm noticing that many of the hard returns don't seem to have carried over.

Specifically, when I view posts via WordPress... I can tell where paragraphs end/begin, but there's no space between paragraphs. It's as though a single hard return registered, but the second hard return did not.

In cracking open the MT export file (just a .txt file), I see that the hard returns are present in the exported file. No paragraph tags or break tags, just hard returns.

In the MT exported .txt file, the entry text looks like this:

Text in paragraph 1.

Text in paragraph 2.

But when viewed via WordPress, the entry text looks like this:

Text in paragraph 1.
Text in paragraph 2.

At this point, my options are:

1) Revisit MT and try to export data out with paragraph and break tags.

I've looked, and there doesn't seem to be anything other than a big "export" button. I've verified that my text formatting settings are set to "convert line breaks."

2) Run GREP patterns sweeps on my exported .txt file and insert any necessary paragraph or break tags for every entry.

3) Figure out some way for WordPress to recognize the hard returns - or at least, the second hard return. In looking a bit closer at the exported MT text file, I see this:

--------
AUTHOR: avoision
TITLE: This Week's Assignment is...
BASENAME: this_weeks_assignment_is
STATUS: Publish
ALLOW COMMENTS: 1
CONVERT BREAKS: __default__
ALLOW PINGS: 1
DATE: 07/04/2002 12:00:01 AM
-----

Is it possible that there's some other value I can change the CONVERT BREAKS line to, so that WordPress will pick up both hard returns in my entry bodies? Again, WP seems to be picking up a singular hard return... but not in cases where I have more than one.

I can create some text factories in BBEdit, but man... I really, really don't want to. I've been keeping a daily blog for about 6 years now, and have about 6,000 entries all in all. It's not that I'm unwilling to roll up my sleeves and do the dirty work - I just am hoping there's another approach that I may not know of.

I'm dusting off my regular expression chops as we speak, but would love to hear any other ideas/options regarding importing this info.

How to edit feeds in Wordpress 2.7?

I use Wordpress 2.7. How do I edit the RSS feed(s)? Please help me troubleshoot my situation ... Please help a gal out! I want to insert ads into my feed -- direct ads, not Adsense ads -- ideally every nth post but I'm having trouble getting them to show up at all, so that's my question for now.

I'm using Wordpress 2.7, and OpenX to serve ads. I also use Feedburner Feedsmith to redirect my feeds to Feedburner.

I tried to insert an html ad invocation code (built using these instructions from OpenX) using the Better Feed plugin (which you can use to add various things to your post footer), but all that ended up showing up in the feed was the code. Better Feed does successfully display tags and categories for each post.

I tried to go into the feed template according to these instructions, but they all seem to be redirected elsewhere. But if Better Feeds is inserting tags and categories, doesn't the feed template live somewhere on my server? If so, where? Do I need to get rid of Feedburner to make this all work?

Please let me know what other info/code/etc I can provide.

(Yes, I tried the wordpress forums, but didn't have any luck getting a response.)

XML-RPC posting throws up error

Why can't I get a wordpress.org blog to enable XML-RPC posting? I installed a new version of Wordpress on a subdomain (history.keithkeirstead.com). I was setting up and checked the box for XML-RPC posting when I clicked save changes it sometimes gives me a 403 forbidden error or it will redirect me to the blog and says sorry no posts can be found. Everything else seems to work fine, I can update sidebar, add new posts but just not enable XML-RPC posting. So far I have tried it with different themes, deactivating all the plugins and deleting everything and completely reinstalling wordpress, but I still get the same error. Does anybody know why this is happening or how to fix it?

Ive Googled around and found no errors like this, and posted on the wordpress forums but they seem less then helpful so I turn to the hive mind to hopefully help, Thanks!

I'm thinking about starting a 'blog' or an online 'portfolio' type of website. My primary goal is to showcase projects and things I have worked on for fun and school to potential employers. I want to keep the site professional and technical. Tips or advice? I am a junior computer engineering student and will graduate a semester early (December of 2009). I have started applying to jobs and have had a couple of interviews. Two of my internships were in web development and I want to showcase some of my work online.

I'm thinking about starting a 'blog' or an online 'portfolio' type of website. My primary goal is to showcase projects and things I have worked on for fun and school to potential employers. I want to keep the site professional and technical.

I also thought of keeping an up-to-date resume on the 'blog'.

For those that have hired recent graduates, did they have a website? Is it a consideration or something you would even look at?

I am planning on using Wordpress and customizing it to my own needs. As a computer engineer, is this acceptable or do I need to roll-my-own? I can definitely do it, I'm just not sure if it's worth the headache.

I would appreciate any tips, advice, or things to avoid.

** I'm using 'blog' loosely because there may be a blog-like aspect to it. Such as, any recent Stackoverflow.com topics that relate to a project I may post or discuss.

Why is Wordpress opening new windows?

Since upgrading to Wordpress 2.7, every single link on my blog opens in a new window. Why? I've noticed this problem in 4 different browsers on 2 different machines.

Any time a link is clicked, be it to leave a comment, check out the archives, whatever, a new window is created which the relevant page then loads in.

Why is this?

I've tried disabling all plugins & reinstalling Wordpress. I've tried a few different themes, including one I know works on 2.6.1, and they all exhibit this odd behaviour. I've even tried a completely fresh install of Wordpress 2.7, in a just-created folder (to ensure that nothing was left behind) and it's still doing the same thing. I've duplicated the 2.7 setup, but used Wordpress 2.6.1 instead, and not been able to duplicate the problem. So, I figure it's something in 2.7 that's causing this.

What do I need to do to get it to open the links in the same window?

Why are there no items in the category feeds of my self-hosted WordPress blog even though my overall feed is fine? I have a self-hosted blog at raddevon.com. My overall feed updates normally with all my posted items. I am using my categories in my posting, but all my feeds for the three overall categories on my site are empty.

The category feeds:
http://raddevon.com/category/gaming/feed/

I'm running WordPress 2.7. I would really appreciate any insight you might have. Other resources have failed miserably to answer this question. Thanks!

Why is my wordpress so slow?

Why is my Wordpress blog so slow in loading? Not just the blog itself, but the dashboard and every action I take on it? It takes up to 4 minutes, sometimes just coming up blank. I have checked with my host, they say that part is fine. I have upgraded a few times (but not to the most recent 2.7). I have been on different computers. Currently on MacBookPro OS X 10.5.5 This has been happening ever since I started my blog 2 years ago. I am mystified. Every action, from logging in, creating a post, going to the blog itself, every aspect takes a minimum of 30 seconds, up to 4 minutes, and sometimes (like now) it takes 4 minutes and then when done, I just get a blank page.

I have googled endlessly, but can't find anything that addresses the whole problem. It is not just the dashboard, not just the site, that loads slowly, but every single aspect of my wordpress.

(I have also used different themes, different computers, different versions, etc.) Again, my host machighway, said there is no problem on their end. And when this is happening, I can get to other websites just fine.

You can get to my blog from my profile>website>blog

After taking up to 4 minutes to load this morning, of course now it is on the faster side (actually faster than I have ever seen it only about 5 seconds), as I go to post this, so I am not looking for "it comes up just fine for me" answers.
