When I try to type something into a Facebook status update, I get a lightbox effect wherein the update pops forward and the rest of the screen dims. Unfortunately, this new "effect" makes me lose characters I'm typing, which is driving me effin' bonkers. Facebook, like most monoliths, isn't going to be helpful with fixing this. Any ideas? Scripts I can block? Etc.?
I want to block my daughter's internet access except to three, homework-related websites, from the hour of 3 to 4, Mon-Thurs. This is a mandatory condition of her getting to use her computer for homework in her after school program. Right now she has Chrome and Firefox installed on her MacBook. She is on board and wants to follow the rules, so will probably not go way out of her way to circumvent a blocker program. What is the easiest, bestest extension I should use?

I'm a blocked artist. I worked professionally in graphic design/animation for many years, but professional burn out kicked my butt and I've barely picked up a pencil (let alone a Cintiq) for well over a year. I'd like to get involved in drawing again, starting with baby steps cuz that's the kind of snowflake I am. [more inside]

I really like Fabriano blocks - particularly the A5 dot-patterned paper that is glue-bound on the left side of the block (see here. I would like to get a leather (or other suitably durable material), A5-sized zipper-closing cover to hold one of these with writing implements (pen, pencil, and eraser)... [more inside]

I'm sure there are many games like this, but I can't find anything at all similar to the one I'm thinking of. It was a "block pusher" (I'm not sure what else to call it, the sort of game where you solve a puzzle like this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sokoban). I played it on DOS when I was a kid. I believe the game was set in a dungeon, or at least stone featured heavily. There were various enemies, and you would push around blocks to get through the puzzle while defending yourself from the enemies. Can anyone think of any specific games like this? It would have been released by 1996 or so at the latest.
When I follow a link to a news story, invariably the site nags me to "sign-up" with a pop-over that must be dismissed before I can read the article. Is there a browser add-on or RSS code I can put into my custom RSS style sheet to block these annoyances? [more inside]

Sometimes, some documents I read are so convoluted that I don't understand what they are telling me. I've found this to be true in for legal documents including terms of agreements and constitutions among others. Is there any kind of program that looks at the syntax of sections of text and converts them into block diagrams showing the relationships between subjects and objects with the verb, adverbs, adjectives, etc. showing how they are connected? For instance, if it was highlighting the sentence, "See Spot run", there would be two boxes, one labeled Spot and one labeled You with an arrow connecting the latter to the former. I'm thinking of something similar to sentence diagramming but graphically represented and not nearly as complicated. It seems to me that if something could lay out all of the relationships within a document, that would make it much easier for someone to understand what it means. Or is that magical thinking on my part?
Hi Mefi Community, I would like to apply for an MFT grad program but feel a huge block when it comes to the personal statement, as well as the letter of reference(s). One of my recommenders has asked that I draft the letter of reference and he will approve it after review, but I've never actually even seen one of these before, so do not know where to begin! Why don't gmail or other webmail providers have a simple "block sender" button, which not only archives/deletes a message but automatically does this for any future messages from that sender, so that you don't even see them? [more inside]
I really need to block someone on Instagram. This person headed this off by blocking me first, which I am told means they can still look through all the pictures I post. I need for them to not be able to do this. I can't search usernames to block them because their username doesn't exist anymore for people they have blocked (like me), but I need to block them, and this functionality of "can't block anyone who blocked you" seems kind of dangerous. I must be mistaken?
I went on a long, long break form my creative career cause I was feeling burnt out due to some failures and now I can't seem to get back into it, possibly because I no longer have a financial incentive to do so. How can I fix this? Warning: Long, super privileged person problems. [more inside]
i've been living in an apartment building in san francisco for 10 years and have a one-car garage. for much of that time i parked my car on the street, parallel to the curb, blocking my own driveway to some extent. i also had friends park there cars there, and when i had a rental car, i parked it there on and off for several months. no one ever got a ticket. a couple months ago i parked a friend's car there overnight and got a ticket. apparently someone had called in a complaint, although the car was extending only into my own driveway, and by a small amount at that. i protested the $98 ticket, saying that i was the driver and the only one authorized to call in a complaint, but it was denied. i have no idea who called in the complaint, and DPT will not give out that information. i plan to do an in-person hearing. has anyone successfully fought this sort of ticket? I've been receiving calls every few days for the past few months from a company trying to sell me prescription drugs from India. I've tried telling them to please stop calling, putting them on donotcall.gov, filing a complaint with the FCC, and even complaining to Washington state which seems to be where the calls are routed from domestically. None of these have worked so far...though that isn't too surprising. What does surprise me is that I'm unable to even put a block on the number because it has a 3 digit int'l prefix and Verizon's system for blocking can only handle 10 digit numbers! The number reads on 001-206-337-3269 on my phone. Pretty frustrating. Any other ideas? thanks!

Our street in Chicago was just repaved, and in honor of The City that Works, we're closing it off on Saturday to throw a block party. We've got 100 feet of beautifully smooth black asphalt with a slight crown and a gradual west to east fall of about 3 feet or so, enough for things to slowly roll with a starter push. We don't have enough time to make soap box racers, but what else could we do with the street before it's ripped to shreds by snowplows?
