What is it that gives early 60s TV its distinctive look?

Why does early 60s black and white television look so good? HBO tonight had a show about the kennedy assassination and showed the footage of lee oswald being shot. Content aside, the Youtube version doesn't do justice to the quality of the tv version. It and other similar early 60s black and white seem to me to be very crisp, clear, and vivid. Is this to do with the technology of the recording or perhaps the archival method?

Can you please identify and/or link me to a black & white flash animation of black birds marching and flying in repeated ranks... Can you please identify and/or link me to a black & white flash animation of black birds marching and flying in repeated ranks to upbeat music, disturbing a man bathing, turning into British bobbies [policemen], turning into military figures, shot from guns endlessly and repeatedly. It was surprising, hypnotic, slightly psychedelic and frantic. I saw once on [I think] StumbleUpon. I am so craving to see it again, and my Google fu has failed me.

HomeTheaterFilter: I have a Sony SLV-360 connected to an EIKI LC-X60 projector with component video cable. When I try and watch a DVD on the Sony, it only shows in black and white. How can I fix this?

Does megapixel matter for black and white photography?

If I'm planning on taking only simple black and white, or perhaps sepia, pictures, does the number of megapixels in a camera matter all that much? I'm not planning on being the next Ansel Adams, btw.
