I've been teaching in an environment where the students each have unique names. They come from lower-income black urban families, and the names are in the style of those satirized by Key and Peele in the "East-West Bowl" sketches. It feels too sensitive to ask them directly, but I wonder how these names are developed. Is the cultural value to give each child an entirely unique name? Or is it more to use elements of traditional African names in a way that's simply become fashionable?

I've read that the art of film making was developed with white skin in mind. Are there articles or books that describe this bias in more detail? I remember reading somewhere that The Wire, having to film many scenes featuring only black people, developed techniques to film black skin more effectively. Is that true? Thank you.
My husband and I recently watched Dope and really enjoyed it. We'd like to seek out more movies by African-American creators. Any recommendations are welcome, but we are especially interested in movies made by and starring African Americans, and we prefer movies that are somewhat "fun", even if they have serious themes. (We're open to various interpretations of "made by", but generally written and/or directed counts.) [more inside]
You guys are good at this: please help! I'm trying to find a half-remembered scene from a movie, probably by Spike Lee, in which African-American kids are excited to see a black person/family on television. I thought it was Crooklyn but I've read the script and I'm not finding the scene I want. Help me! [more inside]

My mom is elderly. She and her husband support my mostly unemployed brother in his 30s. I live far away but talk to her daily. My sibling and his father are into racist, misogynistic ideas and believe the end of the world is coming. They stockpile supplies and make my mom read David Icke (anti-semitism thinly veiled as "reptile aliens" taking over the government) as well as how vaccines and GMOS are poisoning us. I tried to talk to her but she thinks what I say is hard to understand (academic language) so maybe science is hiding something. [more inside]
Where can I find royalty free photography and art for science fiction and space? Things like black holes, worm holes, spaceships, and futuristic technology? I'm looking for something with a Weyland Industries vibe to it.
I would like to visit a city in the US that is not commonly thought of as a vacation destination, but still has a lot to offer a tourist. However, as a woman of colour that does not drive and will be travelling alone, I would like a safe and friendly choice. I would like ideas for places with a lot of history and fine dining, which are easy to travel by foot/ public transportation, and friendly towards different looking people. Examples of what I am and am not looking for inside... [more inside]

I'm looking for examples of written and visual humour (newspaper columns, stories, comic strips) produced by African-Americans for an African-American audience prior to the Civil Rights era. I've read Langston Hughes's Simple stories, and have seen some scattered examples of cartoons by Jackie Ormes, Chester Commodore, &c., but was hoping to find more. Online archives would be great, but I'm also interested in hearing about print anthologies. Thanks!

Where can I find statistics of black officers who have used lethal force against black people.
I saw a comic short in the eighties (?), not Martin Scorsese's The Big Shave, where a guy cuts himself shaving, hits his head trying to get a BandAid, injures himself more and more colorfully as he tries to cope with his previous injuries, eventually dominoing into his death. What was it?
I recently saw Rashōmon, and was wondering if the hive-mind had suggestions for more (live-action, not anime) Japanese movies that are black and white, but set in more modern-ish times? [more inside]
After reading a recommendation here for the utterly delightful Ms. Rumphius, I started thinking about kids books about travel that I used to enjoy. When I was a kid I loved a picture book about a kingdom where everyone had to wear black all the time because the prince or princess had died and the kingdom was in mourning, and an apprentice tailor traveled the world by boat and learned about clothing in different cultures and eventually came home and made beautiful colorful clothing for everyone in the kingdom and the sadness over the kingdom was lifted. I have searched and searched and can't remember anything more about it. Can anyone remember? It was a lovely book and I would like to share it with my daughter.

I have a vague recollection of a very old, black and white cartoon about a huge cat that goes to a junk yard and searches for a mouse who lives in a house (I think). The cat kind of looks like Felix (or so I remember). There is a lot of gold in the episode (for reasons I can't seem to explain). The second cartoon is also old (probably 70s animation) and is about a boy who has these surreal adventures. I remember him riding his little car all over the place and in one scene, he is walking on a tight rope. There is also an umbrella scene. And I think it rains at one point. I believe the cartoon was British, but I'm not sure.
I'm thinking of starting a low-key blog that posts black and white photographs of impoverished and disadvantaged people from around the world. The stories don't have to be elaborate or contain a lot of photos. Each one can consist of only one photo and a short description of the person's plight. Are there any similar websites/blogs out there? [more inside]

I recently stumbled across this image, and I'd like to buy it. However, Google Search by Image didn't yield any applicable results, and I wasn't able to come up with the right Google phrasing to yield anything meaningful. Anyone know where I might be able to buy this (preferably via an online retailer, e.g. Amazon, etc.)?
Probably a long shot, but I'm trying to identify a stand-up comedian who I would have seen live in Peoria, IL in the early 1990s (definitely before 1994). I don't know if he was strictly stand-up or if he went on to any kind of career in mass media. He was a young black guy with great physical comic presence. The part of his act I have never forgotten is a very accurate and hilarious imitation of the contortions women go through to put on pantyhose, which ended with the comment that he loved the fact that every woman in the room would be thinking of him when they put on their hose from then on. I STILL do, after 20 years. Help me remember who I'm thinking of?

We've gone to Burning Man for a few years. This year a friend is joining us who is a burgin. We know there are things that have become automatic to us that we won't remember to pass on - and probably things we've never figured out that are great ides. What's your best tip, or tips, for Burning Man?
My friend has asked me to help put a few highlights in her hair. I have experience doing my own hair so normally I wouldn't need help, but I'm a white girl and my friend has natural African American hair. [more inside]
My favourite t-shirts are on their last legs, and the place where I bought them (Principles for Men) no longer exists. They're black, v-neck, with side seams and vents, and very much designed as outerwear. The fabric is heavy, perhaps even a little heavier than Hanes Beefy or Fruit of the Loom Heavyweight (6.1oz) and most store/fancy-brand shirts use much thinner cloth. Any suggestions? US sources as a first option, but ones in the UK are useful as well.

Hello, I'm having some difficulty getting a conclusive answer to the question of which is more "proper" grammatically and in academia. When referring to "blacks" and "whites" in society, I used to write them without quotes until a professor corrected me. However, when I use quotes now, some people disagree. Could you all help me find the correct usage? Professors explanation inside... [more inside]

Some friends of mine got married last month in India, and they're having a large evening reception this weekend. I know that colorful is the way to go, but all of my colorful dresses are too casual. What I have left is a mostly black dress with a few grey panels, and a mostly white dress with a light blue floral print. Would either of those be ok, or should I go shopping this weekend? The bride had previously said that "a dress you would wear to an American wedding" is fine, and I don't want to pester her asking for specifics when I'm sure she has other things on her mind right now!
Help me save my lemon tree. It's got tiny black spots on both sides of its leaves, and small beige bumps on the undersides. Early-stage leaf: top, bottom. Barely-affected leaf: top, bottom, bottom close. [more inside]
