How do I encode AVI files in Xvid or Divx according to the fashion often seen on bittorrent, where two hours of US TV, minus commercials, fits on one CD?

I only ping intermittently if at all, to a wireless router whenever bittorrent is started. Its not upload/download limits/bandwidth or the usual, as there does not need be any data tranfer to time out, just having the BT program running. Bittorrent itself is fast as a button throughout. I haven't lived on a university campus for a couple years, and have forgotten how restrictive things can be as far as internet access is concerned. I know there are solutions to these problems -- I've read about them or things similar in the past -- I just can't seem to find much current information. I have a Mac, BTW. [more inside]
