Ok, I have been invited to my ex-boyfriend's surprise 50th birthday party. WHAT do you get an ex for a major birthday? We dated for 4 years back in the day and have remained friends. Problem is his wife does not appreciate our friendship, yet she is the one who invited me. Do I get a serious gift or gag gift? Are there any tasteful gag gifts? HELP!

My girlfriend is a big Lego fan and a big Harry Potter fan. (Sadly, yet thankfully, she's not yet a big Ask.metafilter fan.) I'm going to get her the Hogwarts Express Lego set for her birthday.
The question: 4708 or 4758?
Essentially, Lego put out two versions of this for two different movies. They both roughly go for the same amount on eBay, and have roughly the same number of pieces. Any insight into which one would be more fun? (She enjoys the build taking awhile and having lots of little things that do stuff afterwards. I think less important is which characters come with the set.) [more inside]

Avantgarde London: I want to take my girlfriend out to a biggish music/sound performance/event. I want it to be avantgarde, unexpected and unique - the kind of night that would send most music lovers screaming into the distance. I am thinking maybe opera, but I know NOTHING about it. And, as I said, I want avantgarde
opera in London
. Where do I start? [more inside]

Is it weird to invite acquaintances/coworkers out for drinks after work to celebrate your own birthday? Is it a fairly accepted, normal thing to do, or is it likely to set off the "she's strange and/or desperate!" alarm bells? [more inside]

I have a 30th birthday coming up in NYC and I'm trying to think of some fun restaurants, places to go (i.e. bowling, paintball, karaoke), and or things to do.
I'd like for a group of us to be able to eat and do something (like bowl) at the same time then we'd all go out to a bar afterward.
Anyone have any fun restaurant or party place suggestions in NYC?
btw, not interested in bowling or karaoke suggestions

Okay. There is a girl I like her birthday is @ the end of this month. She's an amazing person. We went out once while she was home last summer (she was home for like a month), she's coming back in christmas but her birthday is in like 2 weeks. (I'm 19 she's 21). I'm pretty sure she's interested in me, but not ceretain. How do I reinforce (romantically) in my birthday card to her that I'm interested in her but not in a creepy or stalkerish way?

The Spousal Unit knows I like to be made a fuss of on my birthday and is happy to oblige, but this year we're low on cash, and he's a little lost. I'm trying to compile a list of fun, cash-free (or very cheap) things to do, so he can pick a couple and run with it. We are in Portland, Oregon, and mostly homebodies. I'm a voracious reader, and lover of all things spooky, and general ideas are great.

Help us wow our mother for her 60th birthday in November. She loves natural beauty, travel, her granddaughter, watching music and dance, massages, and antique/carpet/porcelin/etc. shopping on the cheap. I'm in NY, my siblings are in TX, and she's in Los Angeles. We want to make this special, and might consider travel, but we only have three days. Suggestions?
