My 3 year old is invited to a birthday party and the invitation specifies "no gifts." What is the ettiquette here? It is at a party place that is pretty expensive to rent out and pizza will be provided, so the host is spending a lot of money. It seems wrong not to bring a gift.

What are some really fun, chill places/activities for a birthday party in the Cambridge/Boston area? I've already thought of: karaoke, playing board games at Diesel Cafe in Somerville, and candlepin bowling. Any other ideas...? Thanks.

QuoteFilter: For my mum's seventy*coughcoughcough*th birthday this year, I found a bunch of postcards from her hometown in England. I'm putting them into a book, and I'd like a nice quotation or something to write in nice script on the outside. Something about roots or birthplaces or something, and amusing Oscar-Wilde-style or touching-but-not-saccharine would be preferred to glurgey-sugary-weepy.

My fiances birthday is coming up Jan 27th...last year she put together a very sweet birthday day for me so I would like to reciprocate. My plan was to buy tix to Wicked in NYC and have a nice dinner. However, Wicked is sold out (unless I want to buy $300 tix I can't afford). I am looking for something to do on Saturday (the 28th?) in the New York New Jersey Philadelphia Area. I really don't think I can afford to spend more than $200 for the two of us...any affordable suggestions? I should mention we recently moved to the area but have been into NYC a number of times so we have already done the major attractions there (museums etc)

I need to send a birthday card to a US friend by Dec 23rd. Unfortunately, I've just missed the last post for transatlantic posts.
I keep hearing of online services that'll post the card for me in the US - but can you suggest any? Also, any that allow me to "scan" in my handwriting for that personal touch get bonus points.

BirthdayFilter. Not mine, my dad's. He's going to be 80 next year and I'd like to do something special. He's always liked comics and has told me a lot about the comics he read growing up. What I'd like to do is get a collection of prints of comics that were printed on or around his birthday, October 16th 1926. I don't know how to do this though. There are also some serials such as Flash Gordon or Buck Rogers that I'd love to be able to find from the era when he was a kid. How do I go about this?

I have a very good friend and colleague and our organization is surprising her for her 60th birthday this Friday at a supposed TGIF. She's a Chinese American and very proud of her roots, so I'd like to get her something special or do something because of this. She celebrates all of the traditional Chinese holidays and still speaks the language with her family members. I being Anglo as they come, don't have any good ideas or much time left, so any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks!

I'm turning 30 in October, and I want to do something interesting to celebrate.
However, I don't want to make the guests have to spend a lot of money or travel long distances, and they are of varying ages and physical limitations.
I'm thinking of something along the lines of "How to Host a Murder," but I'm open to pretty much anything.

My mother will celebrate her 60th birthday in a few weeks. Since I'm afraid a regular present will not suffice this time, I am looking for an entertaining birthday-game. The party will consist of approximately 15 people, and it's going to be a rather sedate round so drinking games might not be the appropiate answer. Thanks in advance.
