I need to get a birthday gift for my new boss (I've worked there just a couple of months and this is the first office birthday since I started). I'm told we do gifts around $10 plus lunch for the birthday person. Extra layer of difficulty: the birthday is early next week. [more inside]
I'm going to an event this week where people sit around and eat and drink and read poetry, either their own or by others. Since it also happens to be the organizer's birthday, I'd like to read a birthday-related poem, something by a contemporary poet. [more inside]

My partner is turning 40, and since our plans for a European vacation aren't panning out we're hoping to spend a similar chunk of change on a boat rental for a booze cruise, sailing around New York harbor for several hours. I'm looking for tips and recommendations. [more inside]
Last year for my birthday, my family came over for dinner and cake, and we tie-dyed. It was THE BEST. I'd like to do something similar this year - fun for all ages (4 year old - 60 year old, 8-10 people), easy to do, somewhat quick, doesn't require everyone sitting down at the same time and "doing a craft", not too "lame" for the adults, but not too complex that the 4 1/2 year old can't do it without a little help. Tie-dying was fun for everyone, but I'd don't want to do it two years in a row. I've got two weeks and can get pretty much anything in store or from the internet. Willing to spend a bit of cash. Thanks!
My birthday was a couple of days ago, and I didn't receive a card or a gift from my sister, which I thought was strange as we've always sent each other something on our birthdays. I did talk to my mom, who told me that my sister didn't send me anything because she was mad that I didn't reply to a text she had sent at Christmas. I live on the opposite side of the country, and she sent me a picture of the family Christmas dinner. I had just spoken to her that same day so I didn't think a reply was expected. I actually didn't think about it much at all. We've never kept in touch very often (~monthly) so I didn't pick up on anything, but apparently she's been fuming mad at me for weeks! How do I resolve this? [more inside]
My mom asked me to help her write a nice celebratory message to her friend who is turning 60 years today. I have about 2 hours to do this. HELP! [more inside]
I have a birthday and another life achievement milestone coming up this weekend. I'd usually want to celebrate with close friends and family but I'm newly single and am not really up to discussing it with people yet. I do have family/ friend celebrations planned next week so instead I'd like to mark the day by engaging in some luxury solo self-care. Suggestions? Snowflake: I'm in Hong Kong. [more inside]

A friend's birthday is coming up and I know something he'd really like - a pelican skull - I just have no idea how to find it. He owns a few different bones (oxen, turtle) that he has amassed during his travels and awhile back was lamenting not being able to pick up a pelican skull, which apparently has a unique shape. I have looked online, but everything I am able to find is just a replica. Is there any place online or elsewhere that I would be able to track down such a specific item?
I took us indoor skydiving for his 39th birthday and now I am completely stumped as to what I give him for his 40th, and was hoping for suggestions to make the Big Day (31 Jan) special. [more inside]
I need to plan an awesome 4-5 day getaway for my wife's 40th birthday sometime in late March / early April. The less time we can spend traveling the better. We are based in Austin Texas so anywhere in the U.S. or parts close by wouldn't be out of the question. I am willing to spend 3 - 5k. I am looking for specific recommendations on a city / town / resort we can go to simply have an awesome time. [more inside]
My wife is going to be turning 40 this month, and in addition to the obligatory good food, friends, and requested viewing party of Man From Snowy River (her favorite movie), I'm hoping to add a fun, mildly competitive event for all attendees: a snow-based pentathlon. [more inside]

A very good friend of mine has a birthday right before both of us will be in New York with a group of mutual friends. I thought it would be fun to gift him some sort of experience or activity in the city, but I'm trying to stay away from stuff that's "too tourist". I'm looking for something more unique- I've been to the city many times, but have yet to live there. Bonus if you are a a current or past resident!
It's today. I know I should have started planning earlier - I was thinking I'd just get her some flowers and a card and take her to brunch, but now I want to make it special. I still have not gotten into the habit of thinking "This may be the last time ..." but it's true. I want her to go back to her independent living facility feeling well fed, well feted, happy to be 96 and loved. [more inside]

For my 40th birthday I'd like to have a slumber party with a small group of my friends. I love scary movies (although I prefer supernatural, and am not a fan of slasher films) and would love to incorporate a couple into the fun. One of my close friends can only tolerate not very scary movies (I'm thinking at the level of Rosemary's Baby). A few other important details inside... [more inside]
Hi. So a good friend of mine is a happy young woman, about to have her 23rd birthday. She's asked her friends for songs to play. I found a list of songs referring to being 23, here on Metafilter - but they're all generally pretty depressing and negative about being 23. Do people have songs they recommend, for happy young women in general? Her tastes are modern, rock-oriented and eclectic - she's a big fan of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Pretty Reckless, MGMT, and dance music, for example. thanks!
I'm the lady at my office who sends out the "Everyone please wish a Happy Birthday to X!" emails. I try to include a cute animated gif in all of them. I'm running out of birthday-themed gifs a few weeks into this game. Wanna help me compile celebration and birthday gifs? [more inside]
Mr Robin's birthday is coming up, and I'd love to get him something really nifty this time around. I don't really have a knack for selecting gifts - I do okay and occasionally nail it. I'd like to really nail it this time! [more inside]
My step-daughter's 16th birthday is right around the corner. Like, 8 days away. We always ask her what she wants to do on her birthdays and usually she comes up with something like renting out a place to play laser tag or going to the water park or whatever and we are more than happy to give that to her and she invites friends and there is food and drink and merriment and Huzzah! This year, it could go bad. I need some help! [more inside]
Subject is a mature lady who about four years ago took up the violin and has progressed into fiddling. Probably at the early intermediate stage of expertise. Birthday coming up and I'd like to surprise her with unique and wonderful gift(s) that go along with her joy of fiddling. Violins/fiddles are out as are bows. Thank you and I'll return the favor when the question comes up for something I'm qualified to provide an opinion.
