YANAD or a pharmacist, etc., but maybe you give me some idea how long I need to take my birth control pill before it is effective as contraception.

Been on Mercilon contraceptive pill for years. Have come off and almost immediately gained 2 kg (in 3 weeks) and when I weigh on my fat measuring scales my fat content has shot up. a) has anyone else had this on this particular Pill, b) do I have to work on the weight gain like you normall would (limit calories in, maximise calories out) or will it balance on its own. I was on a blood pressure pill while on the pill, thought it was that that was taking advantage of increasing my weight (my usual side effect on bp meds) so came off that and bp is fine. But weight still going up.
Have seen this http://ask.metafilter.com/74594/How-long-does-it-take-for-the-hormones-to-leave-my-system but is not specific about this pill / how to get the weight off / the fat thing.
Anonymous as a bit personal for me!

I'm taking amoxicillin for a UTI and I'm on birth control pills. I had unprotected sex. From what I understand, antibiotics could make birth control pills less effective. Will the amoxicillin affect the morning after pill also? I'm uninsured so I'm turning here for help.

I am in need of birth control but extremely intolerant to hormonal methods. I need something more reliable than just condoms. I've been on pretty much every brand of pill and any hormonal methods seem to give me unmanageable depression and yeast infections that never ever go away. I do not ever want kids and would get sterilized only I can't afford it.
I have heard about copper IUDs but I've heard a lot of things about women have stupidly heavy flows and awful unmanegable cramps with them. I'm concerned about a heavier flow because I"m prone to anemia.
Does anyone have any advice? Any expirience with the copper IUD's, or has had similar hormonal issues but found a brand of pill that works well with no side effects?

I've recently started taking St. John's Wort and have had great results. Unfortunately, it seems to cause my pills to stop working. My cycle has been erratic at best since I started taking St. John's Wort. Are there types of birth control pills that have less interaction?

I am in my foruth month of Microgestin pills. I started taking the pills to help control my blackheads but just this month I started breaking out with really bad cystic acne. I tend to get deprresed easily and have always had severe cramps. I was wondering if anyone with matching ailments has any advice on birth control. I have taken several and quit early on due to spotting or worsening cramps. I am thinking of switching to Yasmin because of its reputation with acne sufferers. Any suggestions?

About six months ago, my girlfriend went on The Pill - first Yasmin, then Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo. Both caused mood swings and significant intestinal distress, but her physicians (internist and OBGYN) thought that she'd be safe to stay on, if she could put up with the side effects. This month, as a test, she went off, and she feels hugely better. So, now, we're considering alternatives, and looking for anecdotal advice.

It is a widely quoted statistic that, with "perfect use", condoms have a 3% failure rate. My question - these 3% of uses that result in pregnancy, is it because the condom breaks, or because of some invisible factory defect? Put another way - if you follow all of the "best practices," and, when you're done, the condom hasn't broken, is it safe to assume that it worked?
