Emergency mental health in Vancouver - US citizen, bipolar and homeless

A bipolar-diagnosed friend has recently gone off his meds and into a manic episode for the ages. Along the way he has lost his high-paying job, his apartment, his savings, most of his friends. He has been living on the streets of San Francisco for the last few months and, though it hasn't been kind to him, he has steadfastly refused pleas to get into treatment. He is apparently making his way to Vancouver, I'm trying to figure out what to expect / how to help. Specific questions below the fold. [more inside]

How do I write a will and help my mentally ill son become independent?

I am a woman in my early sixties and have a son with pervasive developmental disorder (Aspergers and bipolar) in his early thirties who lives with me. Although I am currently in good health, I am aware that there is an urgency to write a will which I have been putting off due to anxiety about the situation. I am unsure of how to go about doing this. Details inside. [more inside]

How can I help my friend get help for suspected mental illness?

I'm sure that my friend (who lives cross-country) is dealing with un-diagnosed untreated mental illness. I'm 99% sure it's bipolar disorder, based on lots of information and evidence. I don't want this thread to be about diagnosing, but rather about how to help (I think we can agree that the steps I should take to help would be largely the same regardless of what he's grappling with, right?). Drugs make my bipolar mom a shell of herself. She says it's worth it.

Extremely medicated mom: My mom has struggled with intense bipolar disorder for most of her life. She attempted suicide twice and has been hospitalized 3 times. For the past 3 years or so, medication has stabilized her moods, but at what appears to me to be a heavy cost. She's dulled and flattened to the point that she seems like only a small fraction of the person she was. It's hard for me to see her this way, but I don't know what I can do. [more inside]

I don't know how to help him or myself

My boyfriend of 8 years just had what looks very much like a manic episode. It involved him doing incredibly stupid, dangerous stuff with alcohol that got him arrested. He's out of jail now, he's in touch with a lawyer... So, the legal stuff is as settled as it can be right now. But now we're dealing with much larger psychological issues, and I am desperate for advice. [more inside]

Quetiapine dose increase

Mental health medication - Quetiapine (aka Seroquel, Xeroquel, Ketipinor) dosage for Depression, Anxiety and Cyclothymia/Bi-polar. I take a low (75mg) dose and my Dr is pushing for 200mg to 300mg... is being scared a good enough reason to resist trying? Does anyone have experience of this kind of treatment plan? [more inside]

Bipolar family member draining everyone's health

My sister (in her 20's) has recently been diagnosed as bipolar, after many manic episodes that have previously been attributed to depression. Right now she is staying with our parents and driving them crazy - every time I talk to my mom on the phone she is either close to tears or past that line. I have no idea how to help, maybe you do? How to deal with extreme anger from a family member who is bipolar?

I need some information about coping with a bipolar family member whose personality/behavior has changed drastically since she began getting treatment. Specifically, she has been going into hurtful rages and tirades (all verbal). I'm her closest family member, and I don't know if she's just really really angry with me about stuff or if her medication/treatment is a factor. This is very long, I'm sorry. [more inside]
