How do get into Science grad school w/an Art undergrad degree ?

I have a bachelors degree in film. I want a Masters in Cell and Molecular Biology. I want to work in a research lab. Getting into grad school in general is a mystery to me, but my special circumstances make it seem that much more impossible...is it? [more inside]

How do people enroll in foreign clinical trials?

I want to look into enrolling in an oncology clinical trial that is being conducted in Germany. The lead researcher indicated my being Canadian could be an issue because I would have to live in Germany for the duration of the trial (four months) and because I don't have German health insurance. I know people go to other countries to take part in clinical trials, but how do they do this if they lack health insurance in the country where the trial takes place? [more inside]

How to applying for biotech faculty and industry jobs simultaneously?

I am applying for tenure-track molecular biology faculty positions in the US. My skills are also in high demand in industry. Offers for faculty jobs I apply to now should come anywhere from late Feb to early May with a lot of flexibility on how long I have for acceptance. I suppose that biotech industry positions will have a much shorter timescale from application to their decision and how long I have for mine, but I'm not entirely sure. If I want to maximize my options in the spring, when should I start inquiring about industry jobs? [more inside]

Do you know anything about City College of San Francisco's biotech/computer skills certificates?

Has anyone completed the "Genomics Technology," and "Computer Skills for Scientists" certificate programs at the City College in San Francisco? My plan is to take these classes while finishing up pre-med requirements at the City College. Then I want to find a job in genetics research while I decide between medical school/finishing my biochem education at Berkeley. Is this feasible? Is this a good plan? [more inside]

Single Elderly Centrifuge seeks well-preserved hanging-bucket rotor

Hi, it's your friendly neighborhood biotech lab-equipment-monkey again. In a continuation of the centrifuge saga, now that we've confirmed the unit will probably work with a proper rotor installed, I am on a quest to track down and acquire said rotor. Nobody seems to be selling it new anymore, and the ones I've found used are all missing crucial parts! Do I need better search-fu, or is it time to call the glue factory for this big old spinny beast? Halp! [more inside]

Biotech filter - what are the major steps

Normally I would go back to my university (aka Wikipedia) for this question but I'm not getting the full picture... can you help me understand the whole pharma/biotech value chain and the major inputs and outputs of each major phase (R&D, development, clinical trials, pharmacokinetics, manufacturing, distribution (guessing)) and the risks that threaten each step. Thanks
