I went back to school to get some certificates. During the two years since I finished, I have never received even one invoice for my education debt. I have not been contacted in any way. I can't even figure out who I owe money to. Am I going to be in trouble?

I saw a post on tumblr, about why some larger bills have little stamps on them. The reason they gave is that drug dealers will stamp the bills to keep track of them. This makes absolutely no sense to me.
So question one is, does this sound accurate? Does anyone have any way of saying if this is or isn't true?
Question two, why the heck are these stamps on bills?
Here's a

I had surgery in October of 2010, paid all of the expenses past insurance, etc., and haven't heard from the hospital in 2 years. I've since moved, and received a bill yesterday for $138 that is "leftover from my surgery." The bill is dated February 13, but since the mail was forwarded, I just received it yesterday. I have no idea a) why I'm receiving this bill now or b) what it's actually for, and my contact with the hospital has yielded absolutely nothing. The charges it lists are nearly identical to those that are on the bills I (thankfully) saved post-surgery. I've called their billing department a couple of times, to no avail. The gist of the conversations: "It's for the surgery. Pay it." What are my options?

I was in an minor accident in the U.S. last September (broke my foot). At the time, my workplace travel insurance seemed to have covered everything just fine -- I went to the clinic, gave them my paperwork, they made some calls, said I was covered and I didn't even need to provide a credit card. Just today, I got a call telling me I owe the clinic $500. Do I care?

As the holidays approach I'm again on the search for unused money in 20s, 10s, 5s, and 1s for gifts. I've been lucky over the years by finding the bank tellers that have ordered unused bills but there has to be a better more systematic way than going from bank to bank. Any suggestions? Thanks

News and debt filter: Can somebody tell me why it was necessary to have a fundraiser to pay US medical bills for a deceased person? In the USA, if you die with debts greater than the total sum of your assets, your estate is generally liquidated in probate, right? Medical debt collectors can't go after your family for debts they didn't incur...

I currently use an OLD version of quicken for mac and keep hearing how much improved and simplified managing my finances would be if i migrated over to mint.com. Although I pay all my bills online, do my banking online, etc. the thought of putting all of that info together in one place is a little scary. Can anyone explain the pros/cons to mint.com. Right now it takes forever to download transactions and pay bills via my bank's website, reconcile these with my quicken accounts, not to mention the bills I pay directly on particular websites (earn miles via credit card), so I thought consolidating might be the way to go.

A few months ago, I was hospitalized several times and ended up with a slew of medical bills that total close to $90,000. Insurance has fortunately paid off most of it, but I am still left with about $5,000 in bills to a variety of hospitals, doctors, and services that I am responsible for. I do not have great credit, so I don't have a credit card I can just charge these bills to. I do not have much in savings, about $1,000. How can I make the best of the situation?

Last year I cancelled my American Express card after almost 20 years, just before it expired. It just didn't seem worth the annual fee anymore, and it doesn't contribute to your credit score. I then went out of the country for several months. When I got back, I was greeted by a collections agency (Allied Interstate) who told me I owed American Express several hundred dollars, all of which seem to be late fees accrued on the annual fee. I explained the situation to them, and they suggested I contact Amex, which I just did. More details below, but Amex just told me I had to call the collections agency - how can I get them to talk with one another so I can at least talk with someone at Amex about this?

I went to the emergency room a few months ago for a back injury, and, to be honest, I don't feel like the medical services provided to me were adequate. I saw a doctor for about 45 seconds the entire time I was there. When I was leaving, they gave me information for "if my chest started hurting later," despite my protests that my back was the injured part, and the next day, I discovered the X-rays they had taken were of my chest, not my back. Now that I have the bill, can I contest it?

Modern life brings with itself a flood of bills and letters and forms sent to us by utilities, banks, the government, etc. Some of them can be thrown away, others should really be shredded to prevent identity theft, yet others need to be retained for months and years. What do you do with yours? Do you have a filing system? Do you have a box or corner or bottomless pit you put all your paperwork into? Do you deal with it in batches or as soon as it arrives?
