BikeFilter: I live in a small but bustling city outside of a much larger one. For minor errands, I prefer biking over driving (when possible). So why do I have to bike on the road instead of on the sidewalk (it's a ticketable offense here)?

Recently upgraded to a newer bike, with clipless pedals. I realized that these are great for riding, but what about just tooling around town - is there such a thing as an adaptor for regular shoes?

Okay, you can laugh a little bit. I'm 24, I moved to a more urban area a year ago, and I want to learn how to ride a bike to get around the city.

JacketFilter: I live in the UK where it rains all the time, but I like to hike and bike so I'd like to upgrade my jacket to one with features that let one stay cool while active (such as breathable fabric and pit/core zips), but still has many pockets. [mi]

New Motorcycle Leathers
I'm in the hunt for a new set of biking leathers (not necessarily leather but full coverage is preferred. i.e. not just a jacket). Can anyone make any recommendations on what's worked for them? And (perhaps more importantly) what to avoid?
Also, has anyone tried any of the new Scorpion EXO helmets? Any feedback would be great!

I'd like to bicycle more, and would love to commute to work on bike. However, the most direct route to work is up a 35-40 MPH road. Are there any software packages for mapping that allow me to make routes that exclude certain roads, so I can exclude the heavily traffic routes.

In keeping up with trying to get back into shape and the coming of warmer times here in the midwest, I am looking to purchase a bike. Haven't bought one in decades and I am getting a bit bewildered by the vast selection out there. Any suggestions on a mid-priced bike for riding on city streets with the occasional foray into state park trails? I'm also fairly poor in the "upkeep" department, so some kind of rugged workhorse would be preferable.

I'm headed to Paris and would like to do some bicycling (in and out of the city). Any suggested destinations, Internet resources and cheap bike rentals? I'm not interested in joining one of those expensive group tours.
