I've just bought a new bike, and I'm desperate to not have this one stolen from me. I even got a foldable one so that I can bring it into my apartment, but besides a good lock (although I'd love suggestions) what other ways can I protect it (for instance, can I register it with the police?). I live in Brooklyn, NY.

Please share your experience buying your kid their first multi-speed bike.
How did you decide when it was the right time to switch them from a single-speed bike (other than the fact that, say, one of their friends got a multi-speeder)? And especially for parents of athletically-challenged children: how difficult was it for your kid to make the transition to shifting gears and co-ordinating that process with hand braking? Was the extra complexity worth the trade-off in terms of easier biking up hills, etc.? I'd love to hear various experiences with this rite of passage. Thank you!

Unbranded & weirdly branded road cycling clothing: About four years ago I came across a website that was a clearance center for major road cycling clothing manufacturers. It sold a lot of jerseys and shorts that appeared to be excess items from custom-design production runs printed for odd cat2/cat3 teams in different countries around the world, printed with sponsorships for things like Colombian soda-pop companies, German pneumatics firms, etc. They had a lot of jerseys that would normally be $75-100/ea going for around $30 a piece. I lost the URL and am not even sure if the company is still in business (iirc it was a Yahoo! storefront).

I'm helping to organize a conference in Portland this coming June. As part of the conference, we'd like to do "Portland-y" tours, including a Saturday evening bike tour. But where in the world do we get bikes for 50 people (give or take)? Can you recommend bike rental outfits in Portland? Or maybe places that actually conduct bike tours? (I don't mind giving the tour myself, but am happy to have somebody else do it, too.) Any other tips for leading a big group on a tour of the city during the evening of the Starlight Parade?
