I'm looking into ordering a single-speed bike online (freewheel, not fixie). I'm a little hesitant to order something that I'll be using every day sight unseen.
Anyone have any experience with Pure Fix
or State Bicycles
? Or Motobecane
single-speeds from Bikesdirect.com?
What should I be aware of in general, ordering a bike online?

I ride a single speed (flip flop hub) here in NYC and am at a bit of a crossroads - my bike is at the shop and the diagnosis is grim - the worn out seat post is corroded into the frame. If it doesn't come out easy the repairs might be more than the original cost of the bike. Should I strip the components off the bike and get a new frame? Or a new bike entirely? Bike fiends I'd love some tips/pointers on this one. Specific details inside... [more inside]

can you tell me if the bike I want exists (or should/could exist), and if I'm even thinking about it in the right way? [more inside]

Bike Filter: I'm looking for a cro-moly steel frame and fork that can handle disc breaks and enough clearance for fenders and has track drop outs with a road bike geometry. [more inside]

I'm thinking of building a fixed gear or single speed bike soon. Should I start from scratch or get a cheap bike from craigslist to convert? Of course, less expensive is better. Any tips for a beginner? Links to sites that could be useful for parts/how-to's etc would be great.

I'm in the market for a new fixed-gear/single speed bike in the $400-$600 range. The Bianchi Pista
or Fuji Track
seem to be the best bets as far as price vs. quality, but finding good reviews on the internet seems to be pretty "miss" as far as "hit or miss" goes. Does anyone have experience with or recommendations for/against either the bikes above or other similar bikes (Specialized Langster, KHS Flite 100, etc) in that price range? I'm looking for assessments for quality, durability, goodness of ride, etc. Thanks MetaCyclists!
