but wow, is it ever different from my daily commuter. Help me get used to drop bars and downtube shifters. [more inside]

All my good friends are getting bikes and going on rides on local green lines/green ways, or having group rides. While I had only kind of wished I had a bike before, I rented a bike at a local park and went on a 14 mile ride with a couple of friends yesterday, and now I really want one. I also know now some of the things that I definitely want in a bike, that I would have thought didn't matter before. How to select one at a reasonable price?! [more inside]

What is the legal and/or good behavior when you are riding a bike and come upon a pedestrian crosswalk (no lights) and want to cross the street? What about as a rider who is riding on that street, and there are other riders right behind you, and you see the person trying to cross the street? I'm in Somerville, MA, very close to the Cambridge border. [more inside]

Truth or hyperbole: Guy at bike shop, who appears to be a reputable bike fitter, tells me he can make a bike I like less fit like a bike I like more. Is he right or just trying to move last year's product? [more inside]

I'm in the UK, near Bath. I just saw someone on a bicycle I really want. Silver frame, canti brakes, racer / tourer style. Brand name was approx 11 letters long and I'm pretty sure it began with 'van'. Any ideas anyone? Thanks in advance!

Unbranded & weirdly branded road cycling clothing: About four years ago I came across a website that was a clearance center for major road cycling clothing manufacturers. It sold a lot of jerseys and shorts that appeared to be excess items from custom-design production runs printed for odd cat2/cat3 teams in different countries around the world, printed with sponsorships for things like Colombian soda-pop companies, German pneumatics firms, etc. They had a lot of jerseys that would normally be $75-100/ea going for around $30 a piece. I lost the URL and am not even sure if the company is still in business (iirc it was a Yahoo! storefront). [more inside]

I'm looking for an affordable, 10 mile a day road bike for my dad for Father's day.
He doesn't want anything more expensive than a $500 USD bike, but I can't find it in my heart to buy him a $200 Schwinn from Walmart.
Can anyone suggest a road bike between $200-$500 for my dad?
He's about 6'1", 200 pounds, pants inseam 33".
Ordering online and having it delivered (USA) will work. I'm fairly handy with tools an can assemble it, but I'd rather order just 1 bike pre-packaged and not buy pieces individually and put them together myself (tires from one distributor, frame from another, etc.)
