Bike goes flippy-floppy: need kickass double kickstand

The used hybrid I got for $200 a few years ago needs a proper, robust kickstand (ideally a double kickstand) to replace the weakass kickstand it has right now. I need something strong enough to hold the bike steady when loading the back rack with groceries, but I'm not thrilled at paying half my bike's cost for a model like this one. I've seen cheaper ones like this, but some reviews suggest that it rides really low when folded back. And this one is in-between in price, but I'm wondering about how effective it is. Suggestions? Easy shipping to Canada or a local store in Toronto would be appreciated.

Help me buy a road bike!

I've been doing road cycling on a mountain bike and it's time to get a road bike. I'd like to spend around $1000. I'd appreciate any tips on searching for one. Assume I know nothing about getting a road bike. I'm riding in LA County, if that matters. Thanks!

[Travelfilter] Three days in Victoria BC/Friday Harbor WA/somewhere?

Ms. look busy and I are getting a break from the kiddos to travel to Seattle for three days to visit friends and three days somewhere nearby to unwind. Mid-July, height of tourist season. We want to stay somewhere walkable with good coffee/beer/museum-y options, and a bike ride and/or car ride away from good hiking and hopefully whale watching or whatever is in season. We would like the trip to be as quick/convenient as possible from Seattle and back to catch our flight home. [more inside]

Can I use my insurance and the person who hit me to cover my bike?

A while ago I got hit by a car biking. The lady who hit me first covered property damage, like bike, helmet, jersey, etc., but the bike was below what the cost was to actually replace my bike. Even thought the bike had less than 300 miles they said it had wear and tear. I ended up getting about 60 percent of the original value that I payed a couple months before. The question I have is, can I also use my renters insurance to cover the bike cost? or can I only do my insurance or her insurance? Thanks

Cycle commuters of Mefi: how did you get confident on the roads?

After 20-ish years of not cycling, I recently bought a bike for getting to work. It's a nice route - about two-thirds of the way is off the roads on dedicated cycle paths, and most of the rest is on quiet streets. But I cycled to work and back yesterday, and the roads just TERRIFY me. [more inside]

Hanging bike from ceiling hooks in metal studs

I'd like to hang my bike upside down from two hooks in the ceiling. This is in a condo in Miami with 1/2" drywall over metal stud framing. How to keep my bike from falling over when I get off

I'm sure there's a name for it in German: when you get off your bike and lean it against something, the front wheel turns and the bike does this little death-spin to the ground. There used to be a great little device called a flickstand that kept this from happening, but they don't make them any more. Any other alternates or quick fixes?

Is this bike worth fixing?

Someone was taking this bike to the dump, but it looked like it had a nice frame still. It also looked a bit older, maybe something vintage. It needs a new front tire and a new cable and seat. Is this worth fixing? I don't know anything about the brand so I don't know what they go for new, and couldn't find one like it. All I know about it are the words "Alpine c/moly 3t". Thanks in advance. Here's the bike.

Great renter's insurance for a cyclist?

I've come to the realization that I'm stupid for not having renter's insurance. Mainly because I now have a collection of six bicycles that are very dear to me; a couple of them are even custom. I'm looking for renter's insurance that will protect me from theft (in home and out) and if possible, even damage from crashing. Ideally this would also cover the bikes at full value, not some bs depreciation. I'm in San Francisco, CA.

Need advice on sizing a rear bicycle rack

I have a pannier and bicycle, and I need to mount the one to the other. The bike is a ~1985 Schwinn and the pannier is a Blackburn EX. I’ve tried a Blackburn MTN rack, but my heels bump the bag. Ideally it’d be about 4-6 inches further back and still level along the top (currently tilts slightly back). Do racks come in different sizes I need to know? Are there some bike/bag combos that don’t work? Do people shorten their cranks instead of moving the bags? Is there some crucial measurement I should learn?

Pulley my derailleur?

I have a mid-2000s road bike that was built up with 9-speed Ultegra. One of the rear derailleur pulleys has ejected a ring of rubber (a gasket?). Shifting is fine, though my drivetrain seems inert - when I spin the cranks with my hand, it stops almost immediately as soon as I let go. So I think I should replace the pulley set, and probably the chain, though that's easier. [more inside]
