Broken tibia & fibula, 3.5 months ago, clean snap. I got an intramedullary rod in the tibia, screws at the ankle and knee, and absolutely no recommendations for PT other than some exercises to do at home from the doctor. Everything else seems to have healed well enough, but - my big toe ain't movin', and it's stuck in permanent "up". [more inside]

On the way to Henry's Market to buy the avocados for guacamole, I was listening to a story on NPR about the automobile industry's unwillingness to adopt stricter mileage standards at a time when gas is $100 a barrell yadda yadda.
There are plenty of examples of companies that are unwilling to adapt their business practices in changing times, like the recording industry's fiasco with peer2peer file sharing and drug companies' ip battles.
I imagine three hundred years in the future we will all be driving our garbage-powered plastic flying cars (or working at home) looking back on the time when oil was this hypervalued commodity and people were willing to kill other people over it and we will think how sad a time that was.
My question, then: Are there examples from the past of companies or whole industries that used to be in a situation similar to oil, big pharma, RIAA, etc. that are now less causing of worry among the general public than they used to be?
My roommate suggested railroads, and that makes sense to me. Any other examples?

I may have an opportunity to move out west from my native New Jersey to California. A friend of my father's may offer me a position with his company in supply chain out there where I could but my Information Science/Management degree to good use. It's a scary proposition to pick up and move out...has anyone out there done this? More details inside. [more inside]

Name some big things in the continental US. Examples of the sort of thing I'm looking for are inside, but if I had to sum it up it would be: man-made or natural objects that are awesome in size, scale, ambition, or displacement from their surroundings -- and which I can drive to without needing special permission or lots of advance preparation. What is it with the British and big brother? I've seen countless pieces of British that have to do with Big Brother. It really seems like a very British theme. TV shows like the Prisoner, comic books like Braintax's Futureghost, books like 1984 (british right?) all seem to hold to this. Am I right in thinking that it is a predominately a British theme? If it is, why? Also what good/popular British media deal with this subject? [more inside]
