Unmarked aluminum MTB handmade by master steel framer?

I've been looking for interesting vintage-ish hardtail mountain bike frames, and found an ad on Craigslist for an aluminum MTB purportedly built by Colin Laing. Laing is known as a master steelworker who traditionally built beautifully-lugged track and road bikes in England and Arizona, so my hackles have been raised. It would certainly be a unique bike were it built by him. Would you be so well-informed as to confirm or deny the plausibility that this is a Neat Bike? [more inside]

Who else makes bikes like the Specialized AWOL?

I'm really into this bike. I'm looking for a bike that works for touring and also for cyclocross. I understand the geometry isn't ideal for cyclocross racing per se, but I feel like this sort of geo is the best middle ground I've seen. My issue is I'm not super into supporting Specialized. I don't like some of their business decisions and I'm more into supporting smaller, American made companies. So, any recommendations?

What do the Dutch do cross-country?

I have a new commute that is hilly and mostly off-road, instead of my previous flat all paved one. I don't think my Dutch bike is suited to this, but I LOOOOOOOVE it so much. I never really enjoyed cycling before I got it. Is there a better suited bike that will make me equally happy? [more inside]

Wheel of bad fortune.

I stupidly and embarrassingly crashed my road bike after riding 6 feet from my house. Won't get into how I managed that, but the front wheel was warped out of true just a tiny bit. Didn't notice until half way thru my ride when I felt it when braking. I'm going to get it fixed Monday but would like to ride tomorrow (Sunday). Would it be unsafe or stupid to ride with a slightly tweaked wheel?

Touring bike frame builders located in the San Francisco Bay Area?

I'm looking to buy a custom touring bike and I'd really like to buy locally. Can can anyone recommend any frame fabricators in the immediate San Francisco Bay Area that make really great/beautiful touring frames? Some builders that do work outside of SF that I really love are Vanilla, Geekhouse, Breadwinner, Icarus, All-City, Map, Cycles d’Autremont. I just love the idea of buying locally and supporting a local frame builder and also would appreciate better being able to contact/visit the builder. thanks!

Ideas and advice for a DIY electric bike on the cheap.

For a long time I've thought that it would be a fun project to put together an electric bicycle. However I've been stymied by the cost and questionable quality of the existing kits, and the complications and compromises of the various DIY methods that are out there online. I have some ideas for how to go about making a cheap and simple electric bike, but I'll be the first to admit that I'm nobody's idea of an engineer so I thought I'd run some things by y'all and see what insights you have. What should I be looking for in a comfortable, relaxed city bike?

I've been thinking for a while about getting another bike. I have one bike that I like very much, but it's not as comfortable as I'd like for longer rides and so I tend not to ride as often as I otherwise might. I'm looking for a more relaxed and comfortable bike that will get me out on the road more often without too much sacrifice in speed. Requirements inside, recommendations appreciated. [more inside]

Cycling routes from Pescadero to Caltrain in Silicon Valley?

I'm planning a cycling trip to San Francisco to the Pigeon Point Lighthouse in Pescadero in July. I think I have a pretty good idea of how to get there by just following Highway 1, but I'm not sure how to get back. Instead of going back the way I came, I'd like to ride from Pescadero over the Santa Cruz mountains to Silicon Valley and catch the CalTrain into the city. Can anyone suggest a route? The shorter the better, so the station is not important! I know it'll be a climb.

What to look for in a new bike for a plus-sized female wannabe cyclist?

I want to commute by bike to my job and bike on the weekends as a way to enjoy myself and get in shape outside but am overwhelmed by all the choices out there. I am plus-sized and want to be somewhat comfortable biking for an hour a day. Not sure if a larger seat will solve my problems? Is a mountain bike the answer because it has shocks? What components would you recommend that will make a new bike work for me. I'm a thirty-something with no health problems, just a lot of weight to carry. [more inside]

Please suggest bike routes in New England that meet some specific criteria. We took our son on a section of the East Bay Bike Path near Providence for his first bike ride last week and he loved it. He sits in an iBert on Mom's bike. We are looking for similar routes. In looking for similar I articulate what specifically I think is good about this path for us in the extended explanation. Where to donate a cool bicycle fixer-upper in NYC?

My wife wants to know if there are any groups in the New York City area that involve school-age children and bicycle mechanics. The point of the question is we have an old Dyno Mooneyes cruiser bike in great shape with a broken rear fender -- it would actually have to be welded to be reconnected. We'd like to donate it, and she thinks some kids might get a kick out of fixing it up, especially if they're into low-rider or other fancy-pants souped-up types of bike. (It's heavy, so she's not into the idea of shipping it anywhere. We're in Westchester.) Thoughts? Suggestions? Recommendations?

how to get someone else's lock off my bike?

Someone has (accidentally, I think) put his lock on my bicycle. The police are unwilling to cut the lock without paperwork proving that I own the bicycle, but I do not have that paperwork. The policeman I asked seemed to hint that I could get away with cutting the lock myself, but it's in a well-traveled area and I'm unwilling to risk some eager bystander reporting me for bicycle theft. Where in NYC to volunteer fixing bikes this summer?

New Yorkers, please suggest a bike shop in the city where I could volunteer after business hours or on the weekends this summer. I have maybe two summers' experience wrenching on older bikes in Chicago (think, friction shifting, quill stems, and steel frames) and am looking for a friendly place that lets me trade work for additional training and a place to fix my own bike if necessary. Bonus points if this shop attracts a sociable sort of crowd that invites strangers on its short/medium distance rides. [more inside]
