Cogs are meant to rotate forward, not move left and right.

I had to remove the cassette on my rear wheel to replace a broken spoke. There is now a small amount of movement between the cogs. Is this a problem? [more inside]

But Which Bike is Right for ME?

Yet another special snowflake question about what bike to get, from a bicycle noob. I'd like to get out and bicycle in our (hilly) neighborhood. If I love my bike to be, I may commute on it to the train, about 7 miles from our home, or for errands. I haven't really biked since I was a kid and owned a racing 10 speed. I'm a small fairly thin woman (5'2".) I'm fine with staying on roads and hence am not taken with mountain bikes, which strike me as clunky. A little more inside. [more inside]

Hydraulic brakes better for long descents?

I am looking for a cross-country bike for use in a mountain-y watershed area. I am not a skilled or graceful descender, and there is going to be a lot of descending.
