Help me like my bike

Is it worth it to drop $175 for a pro bicycle fitting? I'm a injured former marathoner who desperately needs something to fill that moving-fast-outdoors-for-long-distances void, and I'd like for bicycling to do that...except every time I try to bike for anything longer than a few miles I get a terrible grinding sensation in one knee. hike/bike trails, passing on the left. proper etiquette?

i go bike riding from time to time for exercise, almost always on hike/bike trails. generally, if i'm passing someone, i don't say anything, if it looks like they're clearly to the right, and if there is room to pass on the left. if they're in the left a bit or look like they're wobbling or not paying attention, i'll give a strong "to your left!" Training for a century but not that seriously

What sort of training plan would you recommend for a cyclist who has ridden 70 miles in six hours quite comfortably and would like to ride a five-hour century, preferably in the next twelve months? Note that it'll be hard to fit more than an hour's ride into a weekday. I've seen a lot of century training plans call for 25 or 35 mile rides during the week, and that's probably not realistic unless I learn to ride a lot faster first. [more inside]

A Vintage Bicycle Tour

I ran across a travelogue a while back of two young women going on a long bicycle tour in the Eastern U.S. in the 1930s or 1940s. I think they started from Pennsylvania or another nearby state and originally intended to go west, but ended up going south. On the return trip, I think they took a boat up the Mississippi or another major river. Does this ring a bell? [more inside]

Replacing the frame on a 54cm Cannondale Six13 Feminine

Earlier this year I bought my wife a used 54cm Cannondale Six13 Feminine 3 Compact via Craigslist. It was in mint condition and I basically bought for a small fraction of the retail price - the lady who was selling it got it as a gift from her ex-boyfriend and just wanted to get rid of it. However, I misjudged my wife's frame size - she should be riding a smaller bike. Being that this bike has great components, I have decided to replace the frame. Help me do it! [more inside]

Bike shop recommendation for Portland Oregon

We're living in Portland, Oregon and I'm looking to buy a bike I can use to cycle a few miles to work downtown and get around our neighbourhood. There's so many bike shops here we don't know where to start looking. I'd prefer a good-quality secondhand bike, but could probably stretch to a new one if I had to. Neither of us are bike nerds so are wary of being sold the wrong thing, so we're after a place that will give us good, honest, advice and have a good range of bikes. Thanks.

Places to camp within a day's ride of Minneapolis?

Some friends and I - all new to the area - are looking for a good place to camp within a long day's bike ride of Minneapolis, MN (60-100mi). We're hoping for something where we'll see few other people, and preferably access to a lake or river, hiking trails, and general wilderness (or at least the feeling of being away from civilization for a bit), and good to stay for a couple of days. Any recommendations? I'm having a hard time with the signal to noise ratio of the rest of the internet. Thanks!
