It's okay because I'm under no illusion that fixies have any practical advantages

Please help me buy a cheap grocery-run bike to get around New York. I'm looking at the Gravity Swift2, the Mercier Kilo WT5, and the Windsor Timeline, although other suggestions are also welcome. [more inside]

Training for a century but not that seriously

What sort of training plan would you recommend for a cyclist who has ridden 70 miles in six hours quite comfortably and would like to ride a five-hour century, preferably in the next twelve months? Note that it'll be hard to fit more than an hour's ride into a weekday. I've seen a lot of century training plans call for 25 or 35 mile rides during the week, and that's probably not realistic unless I learn to ride a lot faster first. [more inside]

What are some interesting places to eat in Chicago's south side?

Help me plan a food tour of Chicago's south side by bicycle. I'd like to make a little loop starting and ending in Woodlawn, covering < 50 mi and stopping several times to eat small, interesting things. Can you suggest some good destinations and routes? Note that we'll be five sweaty college kids in funny clothes, with wallets to match, so err on the side of "hole in the wall."

Do I have a lemon bicycle?

When should I stop repairing this bike and buy a new one? I have a road bike of unknown age which I bought for $95 last year. Since then I've spent half again that on it---truing the back wheel, putting the chain back together after it inexplicably fell off, new (27") tires that won't fit a modern bike's wheels, etc. Now I'm looking at some more repairs, and I'm wondering whether it might be more economical to buy a newer (i.e., slightly nicer, but still used) bicycle. I'm in Chicago and mostly ride to get around the neighborhood, with the odd weekend ride (<25mi, maybe 12-14mph). [more inside]
