Switching bike forks back and forth: doable?

I have a commuter bike with no suspension and light tread tires. i have taken it on light mountain bike trails, and it handles well, but the jarring caused by a lack of suspension is killing me. i was wondering how practical/possible it would be to buy a second suspension fork and knobby(er) tire and switch the forks depending on whether i want to ride on concrete or a trail. Modest Mountain Bike for Student@CU Boulder

Our son is leaving for college at CU-Boulder this fall and we want to buy him a bike. We are looking for a bike that will allow him to get to and from classes and to bike into the nearby mountains. Here's our dilemma: As a teenager, there's no guarantee that he's going to take up mountain biking in a serious way so I don't want to break the bank (to me spending $1000 on a bike is breaking the bank) and have him only ride it to and from class. OTOH, we want to get him something he could do some mountain riding and if he got interested enough, he could replace it with something better without much trouble. Suggestions?

hike/bike trails, passing on the left. proper etiquette?

i go bike riding from time to time for exercise, almost always on hike/bike trails. generally, if i'm passing someone, i don't say anything, if it looks like they're clearly to the right, and if there is room to pass on the left. if they're in the left a bit or look like they're wobbling or not paying attention, i'll give a strong "to your left!"
