I have now heard several managers utter the buzzword "Best Practices" when describing why they do the things they do. What is the source of this new buzzword, and why is it so prevalent?

The Oscar nominees would be natural candidates, but as of '93, Ebert was complaining that the selection committee was completely unqualified: http://www.rogerebert.com/festivals-and-awards/oscarvoters-slight-best-documentaries . (As an aside: do his criticisms apply to the Academy Award documentary nominating committee today?) Where else should I look for credible lists of the best documentaries made recently?

I have just finished a college course in business English. I did well, but I want to be able to look at parts of speech in a sentence and understand enough to know for sure why I am using who or whom or when to choose subjective or objective pronouns. (Example: Do you think it was THEY who left the door unlocked overnight?) My textbook spent more time telling you to substitute he or him for who or whom, but I wanted to be able to understand what part of speech was responsible for the choice. What is the best college level or above textbook to teach me this? Thank you in advance.

While recognizing that I'd like your advice on the principles and best practices of a shared child custody agreement.
I currently share both joint and physical custody with my daughter's mother, and things are going just fine, but wondering if you know of any resources (online, written, or your own experiences) to help me consider what is best for my daughter now and in the future, and maybe it can serve as a general resource for other parents' looking to establish positive custody agreements. I need help planning a trip to Italy this summer/2013 with my daughter for her 14th birthday (golden). Would like to see parts of the south and North. I am a bit nervous about traveling alone. Looking for tips on two week itinery, lodging, family oriented plans. I would like to start in the south as my mother's family is from Montefaconi, Rome, and then north. I have considered a week long tour in the south and then traveling Rome and northern on our own. Would consider a homebase in the north for 4-5days but where to stay??

I'm a 20 year old girl who has had little experience with real romantic relationships. I also have trouble with friendships---though I am super extroverted and can mix and mingle in parties with ease, creating sustainable friendships is very difficult for me. I'll be going on exchange in France for 5-6 months in January. I'd like to practise and build intimate friendships and romantic relationships (short-term, but meaningful!) when I'm there, and try to get a handle on WHY I usually have trouble. How can I do this? Need advice about best method of circulating a petition for a ballot initiative in California. There is a ballot initiative in California to replace the death penalty with life in prison. I'm going with a friend to a shopping mall this Sunday to try and get signatures (they still need about 100,000). I've never done anything like this before. I need advice about the best way to go about it. [more inside]

I'm sick of Oklahoma, sick of cold and snow, sick of everything to do with this place. I want out of the state, but cant' decide where to go next. Over the last few years I've lived in San Diego, Orlando, Cocoa Beach, the Chicago area, Tulsa Ok, and originally the Phoenix area. Most of my moves have been prompted by having a friend with a couch willing to pick me up from the Greyhound station, but this time I'd like to go somewhere completely new and for the first time truly start over on my own. I improved a website for a business. The client was satisfied throughout the project and at launch 1 yr ago. But he fell out with his partners and they're threatening to sue me. I billed about $5k for the site. The site now does everything he wanted - consistent navigation, improved graphics, data driven pages (it had been over 100 html pages with little consistency among them).
Can I be sued for violating some best practices like not saving Includes in their own directory, having some HTML tags inside a SQL database, leaving test code and unused files on the production site and not optimizing queries, commenting-out unused code instead of removing it? Can I be sued for leaving the site vulnerable to SQL Injection attacks even if there were no actual damages? [more inside]

Am I just being oversensitive? My girlfriend shares an apt with her cousin (male) whom she calls her best friend. I feel like the relationship is kind of creepy and closer than any best friend situation I've ever seen. He calls her 3-4 times a day, just to check in. She waits until late night to eat dinner with him even though she gets home at 5. They do everything together. [more inside]

If we end up using your idea, we promise to mention your name in the credits.

Mrs. Killaseal's best friend started a business less than a year ago (so far, so good). Mrs. K would like nothing more than to be able to assist best friend at the new business (food industry), but distance we live apart will not permit that, so that is out. So, we would like to give her a nice gift to congratulate her. Mrs. K wants to know, should we buy her an actual item (or items), in the 200-300 dollar range, or should we just give her a nice card with equivalent cash, since every budding entrepreneur could probably use the extra cash to help out with the new business? Mrs. K worries that although they are best friends, cash might still be tacky. [more inside]

Best Modern Books Filter: Darwin's Origin of Species, Kant's Critique of Pure Reason, Smith's The Wealth of Nations... these books have stood the test of time and should probably be on my bookshelf (only Darwin right now).
What non-fiction books have been published in the past 50 years that will also stand the test of time, that I should definitely own and read, that are classics of their field or, more to the point, any field? Bonus points for books published in the last 10 years.
